Applied Measure – Learning Outcomes
Use appropriate units of measure and time. Read and use clocks and timetables. Solve problems about speed, distance, and time.
2
Use Appropriate Units of Time
The unit of time is the second. Sometimes we use: the minute (1 minute = 60 seconds) the hour (1 hour = 60 minutes) the millisecond (1000 milliseconds = 1 second) How many seconds in three hours? How many milliseconds in five minutes?
3
Read and Use Clocks Clocks have two “hands” pointing at numbers around its edge. The short hand points to the current hour in numbers. The long hand points to the current minute in notches. e.g. the clock on the right reads four hours, seven minutes (written 4:07). by Pingelig – CC-BY-SA-3.0
4
Read and Use Clocks What time do each of these clocks say?
5
Read and Use Clocks In Ireland, most people use “12 hour” clock times – the clock starts at 12:00 a.m. and continues to 11:59 a.m., then resets to 12:00 p.m., continuing to 11:59 p.m.* In most of Europe, the 24-hour clock is used. 00:00 is midnight and the clock counts normally up to 23:59 when it resets. e.g. 04:30 a.m. in 12-hour is 04:30 in 24-hour. e.g. 15:45 in 24-hour is 03:45 p.m.
6
Read and Use Clocks Convert each of these to 24-hour time:
8:15 p.m. 1:46 a.m. 12:20 a.m. 10:59 p.m. Convert each of these to 12-hour time: 13:25 12:40 16:14 00:35
7
Read and Use Timetables
Timetables show the times at which certain events occur, e.g. school timetables show when classes start bus timetables show when buses depart each stop train timetables show when trains depart each stop tv timetables show when programs start e.g. School starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. How long is the school day?
8
Read and Use Timetables
Using the dart timetable below, find: At what time does the first dart depart Connolly? How long does it take to get from Sydney Parade to Seapoint? Is it always the same? If Shona lives near Lansdowne Road and needs to be in Dun Laoghaire at 07:20, which dart should she get?
9
Read and Use Timetables
Using the bus timetable below, find: Rebecca arrives at the Kilmacanogue bus stop at 12:38. How long does she have to wait for the bus? How long will it take her to reach Rathnew?

Solve Problems about Speed
𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑= 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑆= 𝐷 𝑇 e.g. find the speed for each of the following: Hanan cycles 300 m in 25 s. Aoife swims 50 m in 90 s. Lauren sprints 100 m in 11.2 s. A snail takes 120 s to travel 50 cm.
11
Solve Problems about Speed
Two more formulas appear for calculating time and distance: 𝑇= 𝐷 𝑆 and 𝐷=𝑆×𝑇 Find the distance travelled by a car moving at 20 m/s for 3 seconds. Julven drives at 100 km/hr from Dublin to Galway (200 km), how long is the journey? Naoise flies km at 500 km/hr. How long is the journey? dad’s silly triangle

13
Distance-Time Graphs Plot a distance-time graph showing the data below with Distance on the y-axis and Time on the x-axis. Distance (m) 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Time (s) 4 8 12 16 24 28
14
Distance-Time Graphs Which of these graphs shows an object:
a) moving away b) stopped c) moving closer
15
Distance-Time Graphs The table below shows the distance travelled by a jet plane while taking off. Plot a distance-time graph of the data. How far away was the jet at the beginning? At about what time was the jet 100 m away? How far away was the plane after 3.5 s? Distance (m) 5 10 25 50 85 130 185 Time (s) 1 2 3 4 6

The graph below shows a cyclist’s journey. Describe each part of the journey.
