Knowing God’s Word Second Timothy
3
Knowing God’s Word Two weeks ago we looked at I Timothy, a letter Paul wrote to encourage and instruct Timothy, a young preacher This week we move onto the book of Second Timothy II Timothy is the 16th book in the NT and is the 11th of the Pauline Epistles (Romans through Philemon)
4
Knowing God’s Word Paul is the author of the book of II Timothy (1:1)
This epistle, just as the first, is not written to a congregation of people, but rather to Timothy himself Paul had a close relationship with the young evangelist (1:2)
5
Knowing God’s Word We first read of Timothy in Acts 16:1-3, during Paul’s second missionary journey Although this is the first time he is mentioned by name, it is likely he was converted on Paul’s first missionary journey He was already a disciple and was considered Paul’s son in the faith
6
Knowing God’s Word His mother Eunice was Jewish and his father was Greek We see Eunice and his grandmother Lois mentioned in II Timothy 1:5 Timothy was a big part of the work and journeys that Paul took to preach the gospel and establish congregations
7
Knowing God’s Word Timothy was with Paul through Asia Minor to Macedonia He helped in towns such as Philippi, Berea, Thessalonica, Athens, Ephesus and Corinth We see this evidence through the book of Acts as well as the many epistles that Paul wrote
8
Knowing God’s Word Timothy is mentioned as being with Paul during his first imprisonment in Rome (Col. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Phile. 1:1) Timothy himself was also imprisoned at one time (Heb. 13:23) At the writing of I & II Timothy, Timothy has been left in Ephesus for a certain reason
9
Knowing God’s Word The time of the writing of this epistle to Timothy would fall somewhere between AD The epistles to Timothy and Titus were the last that Paul ever penned Often called the “Pastoral Epistles”, II Timothy would be Paul’s last
10
Knowing God’s Word As Paul writes to Timothy a second time, he purposes to continue in his encouragement and instruction He also writes that Timothy would come to him in Rome, bringing Mark, a cloak, the books and parchments (4:9-13) Paul seems to know his time is short (4:6-8)
