Introduction Paragraph: What and Why?
The first paragraph of your essay is the introduction. You write an introduction to get your audience's attention and to let them know what the entire paper is going to be about.

When you're fishing, what do you need to catch a fish?
Hook/Grabber When you're fishing, what do you need to catch a fish? You need a good strong hook with a fish bait to catch a fish, right?

Hook/Grabber That's what a Hook/Grabber does for your audience. It let's you grab their attention and gets 'em hooked on your paper! Make them excited to learn about your topic! The Hook/Grabber is first sentence or two of your introduction. This is something exciting that GRABS your audience's attention.

What can you use as a hook/grabber?
First, the hook has got to relate to your topic somehow. Second, you can use many different things as hooks, but for this paper you can choose between these three options: A touching (or exciting) story A meaningful quotation A shocking statistic

Sample hooks: Topic: Pablo Picasso
A touching (or exciting) story hook: There was a young, lovely boy who had a kind, sensitive heart. His only love in the world was painting, and he began to show his soul through his painting at an early age. Unfortunately, because of this young man's amazing talent, his father vowed to give up painting, his own passion, forever instead of being second best to his own son.

A meaningful quotation hook: Pablo Picasso believed that “Everything you can imagine is real.” A meaningful quotation hook: John F. Kennedy, a great art lover said, “We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth.”

Link/Connector A link is the bridge between the hook and the thesis—it connects the two together. Hook Thesis

How to write a link The link is where you introduce the topic and make sense of your hook. You always need to know your hook and your thesis before you write your link because you need to connect the two ideas.

Topic: Picasso Hook:The piece of artwork named “Dora Maar au Chat” by Pablo Picasso was sold for an incredible 95.2 million dollars in 2006. LINK: Many of Picasso's paintings have sold for tens of millions of dollars. Two of his paintings are in the top ten list for most expensive art because he was such a talented and acclaimed artist. Thesis: Because of his innovative painting techniques, his push to start a new movement in the art world, and his interesting artist's life, Pablo Picasso is the most interesting artist to have lived in the 20th century.
