Curator Information Add Picture Here The curator of this exhibition – Miss Stevens – is a world-renowned expert in Medieval History. She has worked on countless exhibitions of medieval art and culture across the globe. She believes that Medieval History has been neglected in British museums, and seeks to show how interesting, forward-thinking and fun medieval people really were. Back to Lobby

7 The Psalter World Map Insert Exhibit Picture Here
I chose this artefact to represent the Medieval Life exhibition because it shows us how medieval people pictured the world around them, and it therefore demonstrates a lot about medieval attitudes and beliefs. The map, created in 1265, still survives in excellent condition today. It shows the world as medieval cartographers [map-makers] imagined it: at the centre of the earth is Jerusalem, Europe is depicted in the bottom left and Africa takes up a large coastline. The map shows how medieval people imagined monsters to look: it features dog-headed men, cannibals and serpent-eaters. Monsters were an important part of medieval culture, and many of the monsters conceived in medieval times still feature in books, films and TV programmes today. Back to the Lobby

8 Four Aspects of Medieval Life
Insert Exhibit Picture Here Four Aspects of Medieval Life This image, painted around 1300, includes four aspects of medieval life. There is a majestic-looking queen (which illustrates royal power during the medieval period), a brave and strong warrior (which illustrates the medieval knight) and two farmers. One of the farmers is working hard, sowing the seeds for the next harvest. The other farmer is lazy, watching his animals do all of the work. From this image, we can learn how central farming was to the life of a medieval peasant. We can infer that medieval people took laziness very seriously, and that the artist wanted to encourage peasants to work hard like the farmer on the bottom-right (not like the farmer on the top-right). 9 Medieval ‘Book of Hours’
Insert Exhibit Picture Here Medieval ‘Book of Hours’ This image is from a medieval ‘Book of Hours’ (a prayer book). The image represents ‘February’, and shows peasants at work during the Winter. From the image, we can learn that medieval people had a lot of jobs to complete during the Winter months, including wood-cutting and taking cattle to the market. We can also infer that medieval peasants lived quite sociable lives, meeting peasants from other villages at the market. The Book of Hours is therefore useful for challenging the misconception that medieval peasants lived isolated lives. Back to Medieval Peasant Life

10 Medieval Celebrations
Insert Exhibit Picture Here Medieval Celebrations Medieval peasants did not spend all of their time farming or working on the land – they had fun, too. Medieval people celebrated lots of Christian festivals, including Candlemas (which took place 40 days after Christmas), Easter, Pentecost (which took place seven weeks after Easter), May Day and Michaelmas. They celebrated with food, drink and dancing. This image shows a medieval village preparing for a feast. Back to Medieval Peasant Life
