2 Course Structure Semester 1 Teaching Starts: 27 Sep – 14 December 2017
Examination: 2 Jan – 8 January 2018

3 30 hours contact teaching Aims:
Research Methods 15 credits 30 hours contact teaching Aims: Teaching basic research methodology Interpretative skills Writing skills

4 Cancer Biology 15 credits 30 contact hours Series of lectures and presentations Focusing on molecular and cellular biology, and how it goes wrong in cancer

5 Cancer Pharmacology 15 credits 30 contact hours Series of lectures and presentations Focusing on understanding the classes of chemotherapeutics and their mechanism of action

6 Pathology of Cancer Optional course 7.5 credits 15 contact hours Introduction to normal histology and histopathology and how it changes in cancer.

9 Option Modules Pathology of Cancer (sem 1)
Genomic Approaches to Cancer (sem 2) Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology (sem 2) FT students choose 2 optional modules PT students choose 1 optional module in each year of study Minimum of 5 students per Option Will be asked to choose via MySIS by 6 October at latest

10 Assessments In-course assessment: Exam:
Research methods: statistics questions, poster. Cancer Biology: 2,500 word essay Cancer Pharmacology: 1,500 word essay + presentation Exam: MCQ + SAQ 1st week of 2nd semester Usually 60:40 split exam:coursework

11 Plagiarism When a writer deliberately uses someone else’s ideas, language or other original material without acknowledging its source. Frequently a result of misuse of source or poor referencing. Includes thesaurus plagiarism It will be penalised!

12 Assessments To pass MSc must have average >50%
Allowed to condone 30 credits (>40% <50%) Failed modules can be resat at end of academic year (August) To progress to the dissertation must have average >50% and pass 90 credits

13 Dissertation 60 credits; 12 weeks 10,000 words Full-time
Choose mid semester 2 Most based in BCI Supervisor usually teaches on course

14 Awards MSc: 180 credits Average >50% Must pass dissertation
PG Diploma: 120 credits PG Certificate 60 credits

15 Awards MSc grade boundaries:
70.0% overall and 65.0% in dissertation = Distinction % overall and 60.0% in dissertation = Merit % overall = Pass
