Let’s Talk Safety! Slips, Trips And Falls
2
Can We Walk And Multitask?
Physically, yes. But it’s a bad idea from a safety standpoint. We’re all at risk. Slips, trips and falls among the leading causes of injuries on the job and at home. In 2016, GM recorded 663 Fall Hazard related sentinel events – situations or conditions that could result in a fatality. Consequences range from sprains to broken bones or worse. We can avoid the vast majority of them, through: Good housekeeping Paying attention Following safe manufacturing practices Our goal is no injuries, which we can achieve when we focus on safety one day and one task at a time. Raise awareness. Look out for others and talk safety. The next broken ankle could be yours!

Good Housekeeping Eliminate obstacles in walkways such as cords, boxes and open file drawers. Mark and report issues such as torn carpet and uneven surfaces. Clean up spills and wet floors. Make sure lighting is adequate where people walk.
4
Pay Attention Don’t walk while texting, phoning or in an intense conversation. Don’t carry objects that block your view. Take your time, especially when tired. Look out for others — talk about safety.

Follow Safe Manufacturing Practices
Walk in designated walkways. Secure, barricade and properly light open spaces and pits, even during off hours. Wait until you reach your destination to text, talk on the phone or engage in a distracting conversation. Use safety equipment – handrails on stairs and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), and others. If working from heights: Always complete pre-task planning. Use proper anchorage when working from heights. Wear proper PPE and fall arrest equipment. Complete Fall Hazard Control training. Ensure ladders are secure before use. Never work alone.

It Happens To People We Know And Care About
Even when we dress appropriately for the job and job site, and look to be sure our walking path is clear, accidents can happen. In January 2017, a contractor in the Design Center Fabrication Shops was walking in a hallway that appeared clear of obstructions and spilled substances. She was dressed appropriately for the location, wearing a closed-toe shoe with a rubber sole. However, because clay studios are located within the center, clay debris can be present. The contractor slipped and fell, injuring her foot. Her foot was in a cast and for a month she used a scooter to get around. Slips, trips and falls can happen even when we are careful – so double up on efforts to avoid distractions and obstructions that increase your chances of being injured!
