DO NOW: discuss with partner. Be prepared to share.
“My GOD!” the woman screamed. “What is that?” The server happened to be walking by the table. “Is there a problem, ma’am?” The woman’s eyes went wide. Her forehead looked like a map of the Mississipi River Delta. “YES there is a PROBLEM,” she shrieked. “There is a FLY in my COFFEE!” “I apologize ma’am. I’ll get you another cup right away.” The server power walked through the kitchen door. Seconds later, he emerged with a new cup and placed it on the table. “Thank you,” said the woman. She took one sip and spit it back out. “What the HELL. This is the same coffee!” HOW DO YOU THINK SHE KNEW?

The woman had added sugar to her coffee before she noticed the fly.
A SOLUTION… The woman had added sugar to her coffee before she noticed the fly. When the server returned with the “new” cup of coffee, the woman took a sip, noted it was already sweet, and knew that the waiter had just removed the fly and served the original coffee.

That was a FALSE ASSUMPTION STORY.
Illusions are often caused by false assumptions that you are making about a situation. You often don’t even realize that you’re making an assumption! Identifying your false assumptions is important in science. If you’ve made a false assumption, you haven’t accurately described the situation. We will practice these almost every day as our DO NOW activity. Your job is to identify the false assumption.
4
How did I get here today? Rode my bike. I walked.
My wife dropped me off. None of the above.

--------- HALF WAY POINT IN CLASS ---------
AGENDA FOR TODAY Do Now: fly in the coffee SOME THOUGHTS… Video. Definitions. Article: the tell-tale fly. ----> Socratic Seminar ----> Reflection (turn in) HALF WAY POINT IN CLASS Design & document entomology apparatus. Read summative instructions (on google drive). Work on phase 1, phase 2, and phase 3.

Knowledge and skills are important. Grades are not important.
SOME THOUGHTS… Love is important. Peace is important. Choices are important. Knowledge and skills are important. Grades are not important. Practice patience and consider all perspectives. Meaningful feedback takes time. Re-grade form – if you sign it, I will process the re-grade before the end of the six weeks. FIT Tutoring – Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday this week. I’ll be here after school for a little while each day too.

PLEASE TAKE ONE PAGE OF CORNELL NOTES TODAY IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How can insects be used as evidence? Procedures during direct teach / note taking sections of our lessons: This lecture is not for me. I know this information. It is for you. Remain silent & write your own notes. Raise your hand & wait to be called on when think of a relevant question. Focus only on the content and your notes. Make sure your learning partner is on point.
13
Be prepared to share what you drew.
During the video, draw picture notes that describe how insects were used to solve the crime. No words! Only pictures. Be prepared to share what you drew.
14
YOU ARE INVITED TO SILENTLY READ:
Insects can help identify how long a person or animal has been dead. If we know how long it takes a certain insect species to mature from an egg to an adult, then we can calculate the post-mortem interval. What questions do you have about this? Now please write.
15
DEFINITIONS: write these please
Forensic = the law Entomology = the study of insects Forensic entomology = the study of insects as they relate to legal or criminal matters. Post mortem interval (PMI) = the length of time since a person has died. Blow Fly = a biological ‘family’ of flies that consists of around 1000 species. All blow flies share a similar length of time for their life cycles, so they are a common insect to study for determining PMI.

Please write your Cornell note summary at the bottom of your page
Please write your Cornell note summary at the bottom of your page. Be prepared to share.
17
Please take out the paper entitled “The tell tale fly”
Number the paragraphs. Read. Mark the text to extract more meaning as you read. Write two open-ended discussion questions for a Socratic seminar.
18
AVID Socratic Seminar – 10% of grade
We will have a discussion (Socratic Seminar) about the article. The goal of the seminar is to share ideas and open a dialogue. Your job is to listen attentively, contribute your thoughts, and refer back to the article to support your ideas. Your grade comes from asking deep questions, making relevant comments, and reflecting on your participation. About 10 students in each group. Stand in a circle at a lab table. One person talks at a time. One person must volunteer to be the leader – ask the first questions & regulate the discussion.
19
SOCRATIC SEMINAR REFLECTION
Please FULLY fill out the socratic seminar reflection page (on the back of the article). Leaders – You will do a different reflection. You DO need to know the names of everyone in your group. Prepare to discuss what went well and what your group could improve on. Also let me know if I didn’t put a check for someone who made a meaningful comment or question.
20
Design and Document your forensic entomology apparatus
I have the chicken at the front table. Bring me your container and I’ll drop it in. Take pictures of your container with the chicken in it. Then put your container in the big plastic tub. When everyone’s chicken is in, we will take a short field trip to the experiment location. Then we will come back here and work on the Google Classroom document that you started last class. You are collaborating on the apparatus. The report itself must be written by YOU, so YOU need to be documenting and writing your own report. Consider setting up a group photo album where you all post & access pictures.
21
Complete phases 1 and 2 on the Google Classroom assignment
Sign into Google Classroom on a computer or on your phone. If you use your phone, you will need to download both the Google Classroom app and the Google Docs app. Go to our Forensic Science class (If you weren’t here last class, the code is 537ogl) You need to edit directly on that the assignment that you accessed on Google Classroom (last class). Type directly on the document. Start by simply answering the questions -- later you can edit it down to paragraph form. It will autosave. Next class we will finish phases 1-3. This is your time to work out technical problems. Next class you need to be able to walk in and edit that document.

FIT – FORENSICS TUTORING
Copies of the summative assessments are on the cabinet or on our web site caterforensics.wordpress.com If you would like to sit down with me and re-grade or discuss something, sign your name on the board. We need to clean up computers at 10:55.
