What is disability?

Disability is a normal condition of human diversity.

More than ever we need protection of human rights.
11
The human rights based approach means describing situations not in terms of human needs, or areas of development, but in terms of the obligation to respond to the rights of individuals. This empowers people to demand justice as a right, not as a charity. Mary Robinson, Former High Commissioner for Human Rights

Mama, stroke and aphasia
Mama, stroke and aphasia. She was not capable of using the language, her comprehension was relatively good, but she lost all vocabulary, and ability to read and write. Doctors said that she would be like a vegetable, and that she needed a caregiver to look after her until her death, implying that she would not have any quality of life, whatsoever. It was true that she could not speak, read or write, but she did not lose her ability to communicate, laugh and love. And only what we expected from all health service providers and care givers was RESPECT for her, her life, and human dignity. Enjoying life in dignity and receiving services at home are rights not charity.

Two blind community workers and disability advocates had an opportunity to participate in training. Opportunities matter!

Look at this beautiful picture for a moment. Enjoy the serenity of this great moment. Now close your eyes and imagine this dock filled with people, as boats are coming and going. What comes immediately to mind? What ages and genders are the people you imagine? Do they include women with their guide dogs or white canes? Are there people with prosthetic limbs about to launch a boat? How many of them are using wheelchairs? How are they dressed? What languages are they speaking? How many are signing? It may be surprising to learn that not everyone imagines this scene the same way. Someone who is blind may imagine sounds and embodied feeling rather than visuals. We each bring our own understandings, assumptions, and values to research, policy development, and interventions. Human rights based approach, interdependence and Intersectionality help us move beyond the limits of our own worldviews to a broader, deeper understanding of how social experiences intersect with such things as gender, disability to exclude people. Using interdependence of rights and intersectionality to inform our questions, practices, structures, and processes can result in outcomes that reflect the diversity and complexity experienced by individuals with disabilities. The UNCRPD framework is intended to transform the lives of persons with disabilities around the world. Intersectionality can be instrumental in its implementation. By reflecting on who was on the dock you imagined, reflect on your own understandings, assumptions, attitudes, and values and what you as a professional bring to your clients, their families, and communities. Listen and learn from them as experience of the problem is an expertise. Do not forget RESPECT. And to paraphrase Ghandi start from yourself - don’t wait for the change to happen - be the change you want to see in the world.
