Project 1: Investigating the Value versus Cost of Privacy in the Internet of Things REU Student: Patr Graduate mentors: Salih Safa Bacanli and Neda Hajiakhoond Bidoki Faculty Mentor(s): Dr. Turgut and Dr. Wisniewski Week 3 (June 5 – June 9, 2017) Accomplishments: Read 3 research papers on the value of information based on its economic impact. Obtained the Android OS code for Privacy Gate and began correspondence with previous research student Alex Mayle. Completed development of the raspberry pi “Retro Pi “ software installation and have begun adding scripts to allow the user to control it with their phone. Issues/problems encountered and solutions (if any): Was unable to obtain the Raspberry pi until Thursday night before leaving for the day, Since I have begun work on a personally owned pi, I should be able to clone the SD from my pi to the working pi and have much less work. Having never programmed into the Android Kernel before I have little knowledge of how to access the types of files I need to make the changes needed. Alex has been a valuable resource when it comes to understanding the file structure. Plans for next week: Continue to analyze the mathematics behind various models of the value of information in a business sense to get a better idea as to how our current model relates and to see if we can use their models to help shape our evaluation metrics Continue learning about the android Kernel and gain an understanding of the structure that will need to be changed to implement the ideas that we have so far for the project. Pull the information already stored on the phone and begin planning a course of expanding the user base to include non STEM users to allow for a less homogenous sample size.
