Modal Verbs English WOW Day Friday 13th January 2017

2 LO: To understand and correctly use modal verbs
Can you name any modal verbs? Why do we use them? What do they show? They are used to indicate degrees of possibility. How likely something is to happen. E.g. Mrs Millwood will be having a baby. How likely is this to happen?

3 LO: To understand and correctly use modal verbs
Example must You must stop when the traffic lights turn red. must not You must not smoke in the hospital. can Can I have a glass of water please? could Excuse me, could I just say something? may It may rain tomorrow. might I might go on holiday to Australia next year. need not I need not buy tomatoes; they’re plenty in the fridge. should/ought to I should / ought to see a doctor. had better You’d better revise for your exams.

must must not can could may might need not should/ought to had better Which modal verb? Take it in turns to pick out a sentence. Can you insert an appropriate modal verb into the sentence? You might need to change the sentence slightly!

What might have been Randomly pick one of the sentence starters from the envelope on your table. All the sentences are about events which might have happened in the past, but didn’t actually happen the way you expected. Your job is to think of a good reason, or say what happened instead. Who can think of the best/funniest/most unusual? E.g. Our dog could have eaten all the sausages…

6 LO: To understand and correctly use modal verbs
Place the noun cards face down on the table. First player chooses a noun but does not let the others see. Each person then asks what this object, person or animal can do – ensuring they use a modal verb! The player with the card can only answer: ‘Yes he/she/it can’ or ‘No he/she/it can’t’ Can you find out what the noun is in fewer than twenty questions?

E.g. Can it swim? Yes it can. Could it drive a car? No it can’t. How many questions did you have to ask?

8 LO: To understand and correctly use modal verbs
Desert Island You are shipwrecked on a desert island but you and the other survivors have found all sorts of interesting things lying around. If you can think of a good use for each one, you can keep it. Be as crazy or inventive as you like! The only rule…you must include a modal verb! E.g. We can get milk from it when we want a drink. It could be a pet to talk to if I get lonely. We might be able to train it like a horse!

What have we learnt today? How many modal verbs can you remember? Now try and use them accurately in your independent writing!
