Though Congress can decide on how many judges there are, the number of 9 has been in affect since The President appoints a judge if there is a vacancy (a judge has died or left office). The Senate has final say if they approve of the judge.

6. Supreme Court justices serve for life, or may resign (leave) if they choose so. (Do not have to write) Like Arizona judge Sandra Day O’Connor who was the 1st ever woman Justice and served from 1981 when Ronald Reagan appointed her until 2006 when she retired. Justices may be impeached like the President by the House of Representatives and then convicted and removed from office by the Senate.

9. The Lower Courts
The Supreme Courts job is too hear cases from an appellate court. When you do not like the verdict of a case, you can appeal (try to get a new case.) Sometimes these appeals go all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Courts decision is FINAL! The only thing that can undo a Supreme court decision is the Supreme Court. (i.e., in the 1840s the Supreme Court said Slavery was Constitutional, it later reversed that after the Civil War when a new law was made banning slavery.)

Some Types of Cases Heard:
Cases concerning federal law (laws passed by Congress) and treaties
Cases that deal with the constitutionality of a law
Disputes between states
Bankruptcy cases, which are heard in a special court.
Cases concerning state laws (laws passed by state legislatures or other local bodies)
Most family law cases (divorce, custody), personal injury cases, and contract disputes. 
Most criminal cases.
