Brocade Established market lead through OEM agreements First round leader of the FC industry Fallen on hard times – flagging sales Purchased Rhapsody in late 2002 programmable switch platform Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.) Facts: Brocade leads the competitors for the MDS product line, with the largest install base of switches. Brocade built its business by becoming the default choice for SAN switches to storage and system OEMs. They were the flag bearer for the FC industry at the height of the bubble, but in the last year they have seen significant devaluation as their sales have fallen. In late 2002, Brocade announced their intention to acquire SAN switch startup Rhapsody with the stated intention of gaining a programmable storage switch platform. This move was rumored to be in response to Cisco’s plans for supporting 3rd party storage applications in the MDS product line. Brocade has been working with Veritas for some time.

McData Began in the 80’s Vendor of IBM SNA 327X controllers Converted to IBM ESCON (mainframe storage channel) in early 90’s. Exclusive OEM supplier of ESCON directors for 5+ years. Created the leading SAN director products Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.) Facts: McData has a smaller install base, but has taken the lead in the director market. Stated out as a spin off from IBM. McData has been in business approximately 20 years, starting as a plug compatible SNA vendor. When their SAN business declined in the late 80’s the started developing technology for ESCON, which they successfully sold to IBM through an exclusive supplier agreement. This gave the company a new lease on life.

Q Logic I/O chip, system and adapter company Leader in SCSI and FC chips One of the leading FC HBA manufacturers Purchased Ancor several years ago Entered the FC switch business OEMs switches to Sun and Inrange Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.) Facts: Q Logic has established second place in the switch market. Came out with a SAN box about 4 years ago. Their switches are 8 port or 16 port.
9
Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.)
Inrange Began as an ESCON director company OEMs a 16 port switch from Q Logic Makes their own HA director products Directors sold by Inrange, IBM and EDS Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.) Facts: Inrange has established second place in the enterprise director class market.

Vixel Almost out of the market Gadzoox One of the first in the market Almost out of the market now Sun / Pirus Status Unknown Don’t have their own storage Fabric Switch & Director Vendors (cont.) Facts: Vixel and Gadzoox are both companies that began making Fibre Channel hubs, but shifted their business to the switch opportunity. Vixel's presence in data centers is almost non-existent. They are in smaller offices and organization Gadzooks - important engineers and other left to start Brocade Pirus developed a hybrid switch product that combines both NAS and SAN. They were purchased by Sun in 2002 and will probably end up in their product line sometime in 2003 Pirus is working on a virtualization engine. SUN is “OEMing” HDS, Brocade and Q Logic. Have not seen any storage products come out SUN in a long time.

LSI Logic, Sun and MTI are also vendors. There are many small mom and pop type of players too that won’t be mentioned here, but you should know there are many possible suppliers, although not many in the enterprise space. Facts: Most of these companies have both departmental as well as enterprise offerings. In general most of them sell their products directly, with some notable exceptions: EMC sells its mid range CLARiiON products directly and through Dell. Hitachi sells its 9900 Lightning enterprise products directly and through HPQ and Sun. LSI sells its products directly, but gets most of its volumes from OEM sales to IBM, Sun and StorageTek. Manageability, flexibility and availability make these vendors important. Continued …
