International devt seeks to provide the worlds poor with essential goods and services aiming ultimately to ‘develop’ the world into a more fair and prosperous place.

3. China or India?
Competition to the pace at which each nation is developing at a faster rate
Chinese economy is 4 times bigger but India’s growth rate could over take China by 2013 if not before with growth rates of 8.5% per annum

4. Key measures (i) Increase in real GNP. $3.34 Trillion
(ii) Increase in real per capita income. $1.16 Trillion
(iii) Gini co efficient. (Lorenz curve)
(iv) Basic needs approach.
(v) Human Development index. –Between 1980 and 2007 India's HDI rose by 1.33% annually from to today

5. The main problems India currently faces
Local problems: caste system, gender and inequality, education, health care.
National level: poor infrastructure, political corruption and lack of FDI due to lack of public expenditure.
The national level interferes with international help, as it doesn’t allow it to reach its full potential due to the nations problems holding it back.
All these problems have a domino effect, which trickles down the economy and has it greatest effect on the poor.

Priority to tackle the roots of the problem instead of focusing on short term aid
Change comes from ones desire to develop and individual empowerment but society’s tradition does not give freedom

Enough FDI at present and global interest but cannot reach its full potential if the national issues are not addressed soon
