2 In this presentation: We will provide you with handouts presenting a summary of teaching methods You will be divided in 4 groups: Each group has a theme/case Discuss your case and pick one or several appropriate teaching methods for it At the end each group will present their case and justify their choice of teaching method Group work : 10 min Presentations: 4 min for each group

3 Teaching situations 1/2 C
You are teaching a classroom of around 250 first-year chemistry students. Today, you want them to understand the different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) that water can take. Which teaching methods could you use? B You are teaching a class about the theory of evolution at the open university. The approximately 100 course participants have a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds and their age ranges from adolescents to seniors. C You are supervising a small group of five students. They are working on a common project dealing with prehistoric hunting tools in the Nordic countries. The students have different educational backgrounds (history, archeology, sociology) but all of them have some previous knowledge on the subject. D You are teaching a group of approximately 30 master’s students in mechanical engineering. Most of them have graduated from the same bachelor’s program. The course is called “advanced manufacturing” and aims to introduce the theory and use of different complex machines like 3D printers.

5 Summary Group A: Group B: Group C: Group D:
Method: Try PBL. In the beginning try to use quizzes with previous reading. Problem could be practical like transportation. WBL useful. Group B: Method: Normal lecturing style (adv + disadv), group work to explore it deeper and come back with a debate or panel discussion or fishbowl discussion. WBL is suitable. Group C: Methods: Creative work, PBL or project work by building something on their own or observations/analysis with a group (assembly and knowledge). Small group allows sharing different knowledge points. Methods where students teach (discussion group, seminar setting). Web-based learning together with museums? Group D: Methods: Presentation/lecture from the teacher with videos, PBL (Tasks for students), and project work to practice - own problems to solve (combining with tasks from other courses).
