Literary Devices In Number the Stars

Alliteration The repetition of initial consonant sounds in a line or succeeding lines of a verse. The same sound starts a series of words or syllables.

Image (imagery, sensory details)
Word or phrase in a literary text that appeals directly to the reader’s taste, touch, hearing, sight, or smell. An image is thus any description or picturesque phrase that evokes a particular sensation in the reader’s mind.

Symbol (symbolism) The systematic use of recurrent symbols or images in a work to create an added level of meaning. Something that is itself and yet also means something else, like an idea.

Simile Comparison in which two things are said to be like or as another. Comparing using like or as. Ex. As fast as a cheetah. That glass is as sharp as a razor.

Metaphor A comparison in which one thing is said to be another.
NOT using like or as. Ex. He is a giant. Her brain is a computer.

Foreshadowing A method used to build suspense by providing hints of what is to come.

Flashback A reference to an event which took place prior to the beginning of a story or play. When the author drops the reader into the past to give background and add creativity to the story.

Parallel Two or more stories within a story that parallel each other in plot and sequence.

Allusion A reference to another piece of literature within a novel.

Personification A statement/comparison in which something nonhuman is given human characteristics.

Cliffhanger A pause or end of the story during a high point of action/interest or suspense.

Mood The mood or ambience established through descriptions of feelings like fear, patriotism, tension, hope etc., that create in the mind an emotional perception for the reader.

Literary Device Scavenger Hunt
Goal: With a partner, search through Number the Stars to find examples of the literary devices we just discussed in the power point. Write the example from the book into the boxes on the right hand column of your page. Additionally, you have to write the page number down next to your example. First two teams complete will win a prize that will be given on Monday. This literary device page will be worth 12 points to your grade. 1pt for each literary device found.
