DEVELOPMENT OF ETD REPOSITORY AT BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY USING D-SPACE K.SURESH MLISc- Final Year Student R. BALASUBRAMANI Supervisor Assistant Professor DOLIS, Bharathidasan University Trichy -24

2 INTRODUCTION Indian universities play a major role in generation and dissemination of knowledge by conducting research works and producing PhD theses as a unique genre of information sources. Every year, nearly PhDs are awarding in India. The purpose of the thesis is to provide an experience in scholarship which will be of enduring value to the student in understanding how new knowledge is acquired and communicated within the chosen field.

3 What is ETD Repository (IR)
“An institutional repository is a digital archive of the intellectual product created by the faculty, research staff, and students of an institution and accessible to end users both within and outside of the institution, with few if any barriers to access.”

4 Institutional Repositories Definition:
An Institutional repository is an Organization based set of services which the organization offers to the members of its community for the management and dissemination of digital materials created by the institution and its community members. It is most essentially an organizational commitment to the stewardship of these digital materials, including long-term preservation, where appropriate, as well as organization and access or distribution” (Clifford Lynch 2003)

5 OBJECTIVES In order to precede the study the following objectives are framed in according with the scope of this investigation. To develop digital repository on Electronic Thesis and Dissertations of Bharathidasan University To collect organize submit and retrieve Electronic Thesis and Dissertations To give sustainable support of higher education and research in the academic activities To allow institutional students to submit and access the ETD content which will help them to open access interaction To provide wide access to the Electronic Thesis and Dissertations

6 Archiving & Dissemination
METHODOLOGY The researcher has decided to select and use the Dspace software to create the ETD repository for Bharathidasan University under the name Bharathidasan Deposition & Moderation Archiving & Dissemination BDU DR Collection: Electronic Thesis and Dissertatio ns Document Processing

7 COLLECTION Bharathidasan Repository is organized by academic departments (communities), and within a department. As of May 2012, the ETD Collections has 229 documents in 18 Departments.

9 NEED FOR THE STUDY: Bharathidasan University performs a better role in the Research and Development activities. Research scholars are taking part in the Research Activities. So it is necessary to preserve these Results without any damage for the use of future generation. So this project give solution for that preservation problem.

10 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

25 CONCLUSION Barriers to setting up ETD repository at Bharathidasan University Lack of support from Faculty/academic staff Lack of Funding/ infrastructure Access and security Copyright and Intellectual Property Right ETD repositories have the potential to store much more electronic theses and require very little space to contain it. As such, the cost of maintaining Electronic Theses and Dissertation is much lower than that of a traditional system.

26 CONT.., Considering the advantages like no physical boundaries, round-the-clock availability of information, multiple accesses to information resources, faster information search and retrieval, preservation and conservation of exact copy of the original document and cost, Bharathidasan University has set up an Electronic Thesis and Dissertation using the open-source software “DSpace”. With the development of the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation access and retrieval has been increased at the campus level and at the Bharathidasan University level as well. ETD Repositories can provide significant benefits after an initial investment of time.
