NEMSIS is a national effort to standardize the patient care data collected by EMS agencies.
Data Standard and Data Dictionary (first published in 2001)
Standard for Data Transmission (XML)
National EMS Database
Achieved HL7 certification and approval as an ANSI standard to facilitate integration of the EMS record with the hospital record
Such a Database Will Be Useful In:
Developing Nationwide EMS Training Curricula
Evaluating Patient and EMS System Outcomes
Facilitating Research Efforts
Determining National Fee Schedules and Reimbursement Rates
Addressing Resources for Disaster and Domestic Preparedness

To demonstrate the value of the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) as a unique set of crash, victim, injury, and prehospital-care data from the perspective of EMS systems
To spark innovative research and new partnerships among traffic safety and EMS professionals in efforts to reduce fatalities and serious injuries
