National EMS Information System
NEMSIS is a national effort to standardize the patient care data collected by EMS agencies. Data Standard and Data Dictionary (first published in 2001) Standard for Data Transmission (XML) National EMS Database Achieved HL7 certification and approval as an ANSI standard to facilitate integration of the EMS record with the hospital record Such a Database Will Be Useful In: Developing Nationwide EMS Training Curricula Evaluating Patient and EMS System Outcomes Facilitating Research Efforts Determining National Fee Schedules and Reimbursement Rates Addressing Resources for Disaster and Domestic Preparedness Providing Valuable Information on Other Issues or Areas of Need Related to EMS Care

The National EMS Database
Today’s Database EMS Records are collected from 49 States and Territories >25 million per year or 79% of all EMS calls Full database available at Underutilized by researchers and traffic safety professionals A Unique Dataset Person-based records from electronic patient care records Records are populated by medical professionals No statistical estimates – these are raw and unweighted numbers from participating states and agencies EMS Data is the Last Piece of the Traffic Safety Puzzle Answers questions about life-saving efforts after the crash MA, DE, TX, DC, OH, Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico 18 states submit 100% and 8 more are submitting more than 90% of data

Project Goals To highlight National EMS Database information that is meaningful for traffic safety professionals and increase transparency of data To demonstrate the value of the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) as a unique set of crash, victim, injury, and prehospital-care data from the perspective of EMS systems To spark innovative research and new partnerships among traffic safety and EMS professionals in efforts to reduce fatalities and serious injuries

Easy to Use and Interactive Presents big data in a meaningful way Follows Components of an EMS Response Response On Scene Care Transport to Hospital Patient Demographics and Crash Information Helps users understand what EMS data is available and where to go for more information Excites traffic safety and public health professionals about EMS data Important as new version of NEMSIS data standard is implemented this year So let’s take a look then follow a group of bicycle crashes
