1 Things to not do when Remembering Allah

2 There are some things one should avoid when remembering Allah such as:
Asking for Death due to some hardship one is experiencing Life is meant to be a trial for man but no matter how difficult life gets one should never ask for Allah to end it because as long as one is living then there is hope. However if one is faced with something in life that is so severe: Anas (b. Malik) reported Allah's Messenger as saying: “None of you should make a request for death because of the trouble in which he is involved, but if there is no other help to it, then say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as there is goodness in life for me and bring death to me only when there is goodness in death for me. [Sahih Muslim]

3 Even when faced with severe sickness we should not wish for death:
Nadr b. Anas reported, as when Anas was alive, that he said: Had Allah's Messenger not stated this.. "None should make a request for death," I would have definitely done that. Abu Hazim reported: I visited Khabbab who bad seven cauteries on his stomach and he s aid: Had Allah's Messenger not forbidden us to call for death, I would have done so. Hammam b. Munabbih said: Abu Huraira narrated to us ahadith from Allah's Messenger and out of these one is that Allah's Messenger said: “None amongst you should make a request for death, and do not call for it before it comes, for when any one of you dies, he ceases (to do good) deeds and the life of a believer is not prolonged but for goodness.”

4 In addition, one should never ask to be punished due to their bad deeds or choices:
Anas reported that Allah's Messenger visited a person from amongst the Muslims in order to inquire (about his health) who had grown feeble like the chicken. Allah's Messenger said: Did you supplicate for anything or beg of Him about that? The man said: Yes. I used to utter (these words): Impose punishment upon me earlier in this world, what Thou art going to impose upon me in the Hereafter. Afterwards Allah's Messenger said: Hallowed be Allah, you have neither the power nor forbearance to take upon yourself (the burden of His Punishment). Why did you not say instead: O Allah, grant us good in the world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of Fire? He (the Holy Prophet) made this supplication (for him) and the man became healed. [Sahih Muslim]

5 One should not spend the whole day remembering Allah but instead remember everything within moderation – including remembering Allah! Juwairiyah (One of the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him) reported that one day the Prophet left her apartment in the morning as she was busy observing her dawn prayer in her place of worship. He came back in the forenoon and she was still sitting there. The Prophet said to her, "You have been in the same place since I left you?" She said, "Yes." Thereupon the Prophet said, "I recited four words three times after I left you and if these were to be weighed against what you have recited since morning these would outweigh them, and these words are: “Subhanallah wa bihamdihi 'adada khalqihi wa rida' nafsihi wa zinata 'arshihi wa midada kalimatihi (hallowed be Allah and praise is due to Him to the extent of the number of His creation and to the extent of His pleasure and to the extent of the weight of His Throne and to the extent of ink used in recording words for His Praise).'' (Reported by Muslim and Abu Daw'ud)

6 Sa'd ibn Abu Waqqas reported that once the Prophet saw a woman who had some date-stones or pebbles which she was using as beads to glorify Allah. The Prophet said to her: "Let me tell you something which would be easier and more excellent for you than that." So he told her to say instead Subhan-Allah 'adada ma khalaqa fil- ard wa subhan Allah 'adada ma khalaqa bayna zhalika wa subhan-Allah 'adada ma huwa khaliq wa Allahu akhar mithla zhalik wa la ilaha illa-Allahu mithla zhalik wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa mithla zhalik (Glory be to Allah as many times as the number of what He has created in Heaven, Glory be to Allah as many times as the number of what He has created on Earth, Glory be to Allah as many times as the number of what He has created between them, Glory be to Allah as many times as the number of that which He is creating, Allah is the most great a similar number of times, praise be to Allah a similar number of times, and There is no god but Allah a similar number of times, and there is no might and no power except with Allah a similar number of times).'' [Reported by the Compilers of the Sunan and Al- Hakim, who says it is a sound hadith according to the criterion of Muslim]

7 Using beads to count with as opposed to fingers – innovation or haram?
As illustrated in the previous hadith, there were some companions who used beads to keep count with during the Prophet's time. The reason being is because many of them could not count. So the beads were used to help them keep the number correct. This is why in the previous hadith the prophet told the woman what would be easier for her is to simply recite those simple words for she would not have to then worry as to whether she counted properly. So thus using beads is not an innovation nor is it forbidden; if you are a person who can not count. But if you know how to count then it would be better to use your fingers: Yusairah reported that the Prophet commanded them (the emigrant women) to be regular in remembering Allah by saying, "Allah is the most great," "Glory be to Allah, the Holy," and "There is no God but Allah," and never to be forgetful of Allah and His Mercy, and to count them on their fingers, for the fingers will be questioned and will speak. [Reported by Al-Hakim with a sound chain of authorities) Abdallah b. 'Amr b. al-'As reported, "I saw the Prophet counting the glorifications of Allah on his right hand's fingers.''

8 Whenever 2 or more Muslims come together they should remember Allah in some way
That remembrance can be enjoining good or forbidding evil or reminding one another. It can simply be mentioning the name of the Allah. Any form of remembrance! Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet said, "If people sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah nor invoke a blessing on the Prophet, it will be a cause of grief for them on the Day of Judgment." [This is reported by Tirmizhi, who says it is a sound hadith] The author of Fath al-'Allam says, "This hadith proves that it is incumbent on one to remember Allah and invoke blessings on the Prophet while sitting in a gathering for whether we take the words 'cause of grief or sorrow' to mean torment of fire or any other chastisement, obviously a punishment is incurred only when an obligatory act is neglected or a forbidden act is committed and both are obligatory actions.

9 Finally – one should never sit in a gathering in which sinful things are occuring:
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet said, "If anyone sits in a gathering where there is much clamor and says before getting up to leave, Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ashadu an-la illaha illa-anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka (Glory be to You, O Allah, and I begin with declaring all praise is due to You, I testify that there is no god but You; I ask Your pardon and turn to You in repentance), he will be forgiven any sin that he might have committed while in that assembly. [Tirmizhi and Al-Baihaqi] It is related that the Prophet said, "The atonement for backbiting [and slander] is to pray for forgiveness of the person who was slandered and to say, 'O Allah, forgive us and him'." The preferable course in this regard is to pray for forgiveness of the person who was the target of the slander and to mention his good qualities. This will wipe off the effects of such backbiting, and it is not necessary to tell the person what you did.
