Toowit Toowoo How’s the dark for you?

Plot to Plate To launch our theme “Plot to Plate” we went to the Burgess Hill Allotment. Despite the torrential rain this did not deter us from enjoying ourselves! It was an amazing trip which we absolutely loved. We used our senses to explore the produce. We learnt about new vegetables that we didn’t recognise! These included beetroot, leeks and gords.
7
Plot to Plate We looked at a painting by Guiseppi Arcimbolo as a means of inspiration. We made our own interpretation of faces out of fruit and vegetables. Later, we used natural material that we found in the school grounds to make faces by ourselves. We all loved selecting our own resources and when we looked at the work by others we realised our faces looked quite quirky!
8
Plot to Plate We enjoyed listening and reading to the story of Pumpkin Soup, Pipkin of Pepper and Delicious. We retold the story of Pumpkin Soup with our friends in the role-play corner. We had the choice of either being the character of duck, squirrel or cat during our play. It was great fun arguing over who could stir the soup as in the storyline!
9
Plot to Plate We explored the feelings of the characters in Pipkin of Pepper through discussion. Then we took part in role-play, playing the character of duck throughout the story. We were excellent at the task and we all thought it was an exciting lesson!
10
Plot to Plate All the children worked collaboratively on their group project and were proud of what they achieved as a team. We tried to build the city out of construction as in the story of Pipkin of Pepper.
11
Plot to Plate We tasted various soups and were most thoughtful as we decided on our favourite flavour. Then we designed our own soup with our own choice of ingredients. This helped us to decide to make pumpkin soup and leek and potato soup for our soup evening.
12
Plot to Plate We made our own bowls, thinking about the designs that duck, squirrel and cat might like to have their soup in. With papier mache, we used our sculpting skills. It was very messy! Some of us needed encouragement and support as we didn’t like getting glue all over our hands! As we decorated our bowl with paints, we worked carefully and copied our design ideas.
13
Plot to Plate We thought about different types of material and sorted various objects into their appropriate groups. We all had great fun predicting how we could manipulate our new dough. We squeezed, patted, poked, stretched and rolled, following the teacher’s instructions carefully.
14
Plot to Plate We worked hard to prepared our soup ingredients
ready for the “soup evening” by having a big chop! All the children took part, with only a few finger casualties much to the relief of the adults! We had a fabulous evening, with over 150 people coming to the event.
15
Plot to Plate At the soup evening we shared our work with our family. They thought our learning looked very exciting and we couldn’t wait to talk about our experiences!
16
Plot to Plate We prepared our own order sheets so that we could take our soup orders for our family on the evening. We used these sheets to show to the adults who served the soup to us. We then carefully carried our soup to our family! We served over 180 soups on the night. The soup tasted delicious and it was an enjoyable evening and learning experience.
