On our recent accreditation survey report, there was a comment that although we were doing well in the various elements of our quality improvement program, we needed some way to demonstrate our effectiveness as a whole. What I got from the Institute was the realization that we need to tie it all in with the bigger picture – really look at Student Health Services and ask, “Are we meeting the needs of our students? Are our goals in alignment with those of the Division and the University?” Assessment is a way to connect the dots.

Student Affairs is doing a ton of amazing work throughout the country and assessing it. Check around the country first to see if it has been done before.

People are generally hesitant to participate in assessment, because we see it as just another thing added onto our already over-full plates. But just as we ask our students to take the time to reflect on their studies, actions and involvement in order to make informed decisions about their personal lives and careers, good integrative assessment does not ask us to do more with limited resources; it simply asks that we stop to look at what we do to make sure it is having the effects we want.
