Found Poetry Finding Poetry in New Places

2 Found Poetry Found Poetry is poetry created by using words from non-poetry sources: -Newspaper articles -Novels -Short stories -Advertisements

3 How It Works Read something. Look for words or phrases, in whatever order, that you find powerful, moving, or interesting. -Arrange those words and/or sentences to create something new – a poem. -Consider the overall feeling (tone) of your poem and edit your work.

4 How It Works -You can add punctuation, letters, and/or make tense changes. -Try arranging the words so that they make a rhythm you like.

5 Now It’s Your Turn Consider page 185 of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. Select the words/sentences you like then arrange and edit them. Finally, create a word poem that reflects the tone of the selection.

6 Examples Check out the “Found Poetry” Wikipedia page

7 Example – passage from a novel, Holes by Louis Sachar
There was a change in the weather. For the worse. The air became unbearably humid. Stanley was drenched in sweat. Beads of moisture ran down the handle of his shovel. It was almost as if the temperature had gotten so hot that the air itself was sweating. A loud boom of thunder echoed across the empty lake. A storm was way off to the west, beyond the mountains. Stanley could count more than thirty seconds between how far away the storm was. Sound travels a great distance across a barren wasteland.
