Goal: All new teachers should achieve a high level of competence
First year of teaching should not be trial-and-error trial-by-fire Teacher preparation as the foundation of the teaching profession Ensuring all teachers have achieved competence in necessary knowledge and skills Auspices are not as important as results Alternate routes into of the profession should be judged by the same criteria as traditional

Standards: Assuring competence
Overview of NCTQ standards Accepting individuals with requisite academic strength Ensuring that they know the subjects they will teach Training and guidance in effective techniques (e.g., reading, classroom management) Evidence of effectiveness and performance improvement Minimum core principles for assuring competent graduates We aim for productive dialogue about how to ensure all programs making these principles operational – and evidence needed to judge.

Feedback to programs: Appeals
June 17 – September 30: Submit appeal with evidence August – November: NCTQ posts decisions on our website December: Rankings updated Last year: 54 programs appealed Corrected scores of 23 programs on our own All told, 68 standard scores corrected

More time to work together
Moving next publication to 2016 provides opportunity for: Discussion of standards and methodology Dialogue on how best to collaborate on how to achieve mutually held goals Strengthening teacher preparation programs – and making sure that changes get recognition

September – December: Window for submitting new materials Fall 2014 – Spring 2015: Briefings to programs on findings on new materials Spring 2015 – Winter 2015: Submission of additional new materials reflecting changes Spring 2016: Briefings with programs Fall 2016: Publication of Teacher Prep Review 2016 with U.S. News & World Report

Feedback to programs: One-on-one briefings
Provide detailed findings about strengths and areas of improvement Discussions will encompass evidence used and how we reached findings Specific recommendations will be given on how to strengthen programs

Regional discussions with teacher educator leaders
Bring state officials into discussion NCTQ to explain standards and methodologies in greater detail Opportunity for teacher educators to ask questions and offer feedback Hear from programs that perform well in key areas Let us know if you would like to work with us to put such a meeting together in your state.
