3. What do you need?
An A or B pass at National 5 history (or in a similar literary subject such as English, RMPS, Modern Studies)

4. Three units of study
European and World: Russia, 1881–1921 A study of the development of opposition to autocracy in a large multi-national state, the collapse of the Tsarist regime and the rise of the Bolsheviks during the years 1881– 1921, illustrating the themes of ideology, identity and authority. Britain: 1851–1951 A study of the development of the United Kingdom into a modern democracy and the development of the role of the state in the welfare of its citizens, illustrating the themes of authority, ideology and rights. Migration and Empire, A study of population movement and social and economic change in Scotland and abroad between 1830 and 1939, illustrating the themes of empire, migration and identity.

6. Course assessment structure:
Component 1 — question paper 60 marks (20 marks on each unit)
Component 2 — assignment 30 marks
Total marks 90 marks
To gain the award of the Course, the learner must pass all the Units as well as the Course assessment. Course assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the Course award.

7. Component 1: The exam This is made up of three sections:
The European and World and British sections both give a choice of 3 essays. The candidate attempts one essay from each section.
Essays are worth 20 marks each
The Scottish section is made up of three source based questions:
Evaluate the usefulness of a source (6 marks)
How fully does a source address an issue (9 marks)
Compare the views of two sources on an issue (5 marks)

8. The exam continued…
This question paper will be set and marked by SQA, and conducted in centres under conditions specified for external examinations by SQA. Learners will complete this in 2 hours and 20 minutes.

9. Component 2: The Assignment
This is basically an extended essay but this is what the SQA says:
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate challenge and application by demonstrating the following higher order cognitive skills
The learner will: identify a historical issue which invites debate and argument
Research and investigate the historical issue, using a range of sources of information
Draw on and apply knowledge and understanding to analyse the causes and/or impact of the historical issue
Analyse, evaluate and synthesise information in a structured manner
Refer to relevant historical sources
Identify different perspectives and/or points of view
Structure information and present a well-reasoned conclusion supported by evidence
The assignment will have 30 marks.

10. The Assignment is a Controlled Assessment:
It is set by centres within SQA guidelines
It is conducted under a high level of supervision and control
Evidence will be submitted to SQA for external marking by a set date.
All marking will be quality assured by SQA.
The essay will be conducted within 1 hour and 30 minutes with the use of a resource sheet.
It will be produced independently by the learner when the learner is ready

11. Expectations
Pupils are expected to be attentive in lessons and to complete the required tasks.
Homework is ongoing and deadlines for submission should be met
Regular revision is strongly encouraged
Re-visiting essays and improving them is advised. It helps preparation for exam.
Pupils will be encouraged to practice timed questions.

12. Why History? Transferable skills
Studying History provides a student with skills which are not confined to the study of the past. Skills of analysis are invaluable in many jobs, and the ability to analyse and then prioritise information is vital to decision making. This not only provides a skills set for a student but it also keeps career options open. 
History is relevant
There is a stigma attached to History that it is based entirely in the distant past, but this does not account for the huge amount of modern history which is studied in such depth. In order to make sense of current affairs it is important to study the past, as everything which is happening around us has been influenced by, and is a direct result of, that which preceded it. In this way, the study of History is explicitly relevant to us.
  Studying History provides cultural awareness
By looking at the history of different cultures, a History student can build up a better understanding of why certain peoples act the way they do
