1 Design and Optimization of Cooling System in locomotives
Presented by: Momin Fahim Dalvi Faisal Siddiqui Saifali Siddiqui Abdul Rauf Guided by : Prof Jawed Shaikh

2 Introduction Locomotive WDG-3A

3 Existing Layout of Cooling System

4 Problem Definition Existing system is purely Mechanically driven Radiator fan Losses in ECC and RAGB Power Consumption = 80 HP Maintenance Cost = Rs 2,50,000 per annum Initial Cost = Rs 5,00,000/-

5 Proposed Layout

6 Methodology followed to reach the desired objective
NEMA

7 Parameter Obtained in Load Box Section
Generator Voltage Generator Current Mass flow rate of fuel Exhaust Gas Temp Inlet water Temp of radiator Outlet Water Temp of radiator Air outlet Temp

8 Heat Balance Sheet Brake Power = 38.78% Radiation and conduction= 15%
Cooling Water = 22.69% Exhaust Gases = 23.49%

9 Design of Fan Calculation of mass flow rate of air = 40.77 kg/sec
Axial Flow Fan Centrifugal Fan Axial-Centrifugal Fan Roof Ventilators Cross Flow Blowers Vortex or Regenerative Blower Fan Selected:- Axial Flow Fan

10 According to our application (Radiator cooling) we need to select Axial Flow Fan but Axial Flow Fan is also subdivided into three categories i.e. Propeller Fan Tube axial Fan Vane axial fan Type Selected:- Axial Flow Propeller fan Due to less hub to tip ratio, weight is less

11 Selection of Motor INSULATION CLASS – CLASS H COOLING METHOD - IC 411
TYPE OF MOTOR - Slip ring Induction Motor PROTECT FEATURES – IP55

12 2D model of Radiator as per the dimensions provided by Indian Railway

13 Mesh view of Radiator model in ANSYS.

14 Result and Conclusion
