1 The application of Social Media as an educational method in Health Science
Ph.D Hanna Tiirinki, Ph.D Pirjo Kaakinen, Professor Leena Paasivaara & Professor Helvi Kyngäs BACKGROUND AND AIM Development of educational methods as based on working life is a challenge in a Health Science. The aim of project was advertise the Health Science studies in the University of Oulu applying Social Media. The objective is to get more of experience of using the Social Media in blended learning as an educational method. METHODS In the beginning of project was chosen a project manager and –secretary by students. Furthermore, lecturer worked in the project as a mentor. Blended learning was used as the pedagogical approach combined the collaborative learning with students. The main project group belong health science students (n=9). The project manager and –secretary arranged meetings with health science students, technical and marketing experts. The students made manuscript of the flash video and the project manager and -secretary introduced it for mentor lecturer. Social media included in health science studies – case marketing of health science education in Youtube and social media RESULTS The result of this project was marketing flash video of health sciences to YouTube. The students were satisfied educational method and they learned to co-operate with technical- and marketing expects in their project. By learning as an project group students enhance their critical thinking skills, practice skills of working and motivated to the learning process by using present-day method. The use Social Media as educational methods increased invisibility of Health Science. There was over 1500 downloads in May 2014. CONCLUSION This project enables combining the world of work with Health Science students. The use of Social Media as a blended learning method enables co-operation between students, lecturers and other University experts. Mentoring develop open communication between teacher and students, collegial relationship, a supportive studing environment and skills which are needed in future working life. The social media project will promote the quality of education and encourage students to use project skills in their advanced nursing work.
