1 L1Calo Joint Meeting Introduction
A great time to be in a great place 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

2 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Great Times LHC is finally delivering beam We can confidently expect a lot more this year L1Calo is working well Always room for improvement Will become vital to ATLAS operation in 2010 We have a short break to regroup Timing of meeting couldn’t have been better! 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

3 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Great Place Need I say more… 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

4 L1Calo basics reminder Quick guide to trigger item terminology
EM = e/gamma trigger – pure EM threshold J = jet trigger – usually 0.8x0.8 in both layers FJ = forward jet – jet located in FCAL TAU (or HA) = tau trigger – narrow sum in both layers XE = missing energy TE = total energy JE = jet sum energy This is the ‘service’ we provide to ATLAS, and what people will notice 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

5 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
L1Calo working well? That’s what the majority of this meeting will be about However, a quick sneak preview Trigger rates during beam collisions Single event analysis It’s the only type I can do 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

6 Expected trigger rates
Rate estimates shown in trigger menu meeting I believe XE10 rate is wrong Luminosities achieved in 2009 actually more like n x 1026 Where n is not large! L1Calo rate around 0.01 Hz Lowest threshold cosmic rate is about 5 Hz But for beam require beam-pickup coincidence Cosmic rate ~0.002 Hz per filled bunch 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

7 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Trigger rates in run Stream rates per lumi-block are quite useful Luminosity in falls from 2.5 to 1 x 1026 during this fill Luminosity dependence in L1Calo stream hardly striking But it is there! Note that cosmic rate would be around 0.01 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

8 L1Calo and L1CaloEM purity
Same run, L1Calo and L1CaloEM stream L1CaloEM cosmic rate would be ~0.001 Hz High overlap with MBTS_1_1 ‘golden’ trigger L1Calo ~60%, L1CaloEM ~90% OK, there aren’t many L1Calo events, but they’re good quality triggers! 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

9 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Single Event Analysis Here’s the event: Credits to Jürgen Thomas 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

10 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Why this event? Large energy, spread over several towers What really impressed me Background We only trigger on bunch-crossing that coincides with beam pick-up That is if we get timing 1 BC out, we miss the event This means getting the right bunch-crossing (signal timing) is vital However, we read out data before and after triggered BC So what did we see before and after this event? BC Non-zero towers Sum Et Missing Et -2 -1 1 22 59 5 +1 +2 Note: typical random events contain 0, 1 or 2 towers with 1 GeV 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

11 Distribution of energies
15 EM towers with 48 GeV total 7 Hadronic towers with 11 GeV total Probably only 1 non-zero tower with wrong BCID And we only expect 50% BCID efficiency for 1 GeV signals Even with perfect timing! Thresholds fired: 2EM3, 2EM4, EM5, EM10, 3HA5, 2HA6, 2HA8, HA11, 2J5, 2J10, 2J15 EM tower energies Hadronic tower energies 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

12 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
Pulse shape analysis... ...by eye 9 GeV LArg 4 GeV Tile 2 GeV LArg 2 GeV Tile 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010

13 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
L1Calo is on the move Test lab moving 3150 to 104 Probably start of February L1Calo offices moving 54 to 104 Birmingham, Heidelberg, RAL Plus a sneaky QMUL member Probably similar time-scale Test Lab area New Offices 11/01/2010 L1Calo Joint Meeting 11th-13th January 2010
