1 CELLS and CELL PROCESSES

2 What is a cell? A cell is the basic unit of all living things.

3 Am I made of cells? Yes, all living things are made of cells.
Animals, plants, fungus and microbes are made of cells.

4 What do plant and animal cells look like?

5 What are some parts of a cell?
nucleus cytoplasm cell membrane vacuole mitochondria

6 Plants Cells Plant cells have all of these AND:
Chloroplasts and a cell wall

7 What are the cell processes?
Osmosis Photosynthesis (in plants) Cell respiration

8 Osmosis Osmosis is the process of moving materials in and out of a cell. The cell membrane does this process. Cell membrane

9 Osmosis The cell membrane allows food and water into the cell because of DIFFUSION. DIFFUSION is the tendency of stuff to move from higher concentrations to lower concentrations….. HUH?

10 Photosynthesis In PLANT cells, chloroplasts make food for the cell.
HOW????? Plant cells taken in carbon dioxide and water use sunlight to make sugar and oxygen. Water + Carbon Dioxide Oxygen+Sugar

11 Cell respiration Cell respiration is the process by which ENERGY is released. The MITOCHONDRIA used oxygen and sugar to release energy. Both plant cells and animal cells do cell respiration.

12 Cell respiration Plants use the sugar made through PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
Animals use the food that they eat to do cell respiration. THE BIG IDEA is cells release energy through cell respiration.

13 Cell respiration Plant cell Mitochondria Animal cell Mitochondria

14 Do cells reproduce? Yes, they reproduce by the process of MITOSIS.
Mitosis is also known as CELL DIVISION There are five stages to mitosis.

15 Mitosis Stage 1- Chromosome aren’t visible. Each chromosome makes a copy of itself. Stage 2- Chromosome become shorter and thicker. Copies fasten together.

16 Mitosis (cont.) Stage 3-The double chromosomes line up along the cell’s center. Stage 4-The double chromosomes split apart and are pulled to opposite ends.

17 Mitosis (cont.) Stage 5- Chromosomes become hard to see and the cell splits. Two new cells are made!!

18 CELLS are COOL!
