Green-Sustainability Specifications* Knowledgebase (GSK )
OMG Sustainability SIG August 20th 2009 * For the purpose of this discussion ‘Specification’ is a ‘catch-all’ Term that covers formal, widely used standards, code-of-conduct, guidelines, ratings, vocabularies and established best-practices… a better Term is needed!

Green-Sustainability Specifications Knowledgebase
Agenda Green-Sustainability Specifications Knowledgebase Drivers Proposed Scope/features What it is and what it is not! Next steps Issues, Roadmap, Tools, how to get involved
3
Drivers Green/Sustainability Specifications/Standards, Ratings and Metrics are mushrooming with potential overlaps Single, authentic resource does not exist to get a ‘complete picture’ of who is developing what standards, challenge they address, their Life-cycle state and adoption leaving an end-user with the burden to figure out: What standards should be used based on an organization’s interest/perspective of Green/Sustainability and where are the overlaps… Are these standards mature enough? How interoperable are the tools based on the standards? How quantifiable are the Metrics/indicators/guidelines captured? It is hard to quantify benefits and measure compliance to guidelines, best practices… An urgent need for a single authoritative source of Green/Sustainability related standards has been expressed in various discussions across the global community

Makers and Consumers of
GSK Distilled Makers and Consumers of Standards GSK will be a web-based, authentic, neutral, global and standards driven ‘Public knowledgebase’ Developed and maintained by OMG Sustainability SIG members
5
Summary of Proposed scope/features
Phase 1, Sept. – Dec. 31st 2009 GSK will contain all known Specifications in Green and Sustainability space Web-based front-end to enable search and discovery of Specifications Clarification: Objective is NOT to upload all specifications but ‘pointers’ to the specifications and their ‘makers’
6
Summary of Proposed scope/features
Phase 2 Q2, 2010 Automation of content update from sources Frequency of updates (manual/semi-automated/near real-time) TBD Formal promotion to other organizations Collaborate to identify opportunities for content enrichment Subscription to updates on specifications of interest Forums for ‘expert’ opinion on specifications Specifications overlaps Reference implementation experience What worked and did not work/areas for enhancements ???
7
Next Steps: Issues/TBD
Ownership/IPR Must remain neutral and open, free of any IPR/liability OMG ownership/branding could keep it neutral Develop Policy for usage/access to the knowledgebase Anonymous vs. Registered access TBD Funding to maintain the Knowledgebase Consideration of data center/hosting cost if it becomes a heavily used resource Part-time resource to maintain the infrastructure? Sponsorship by SIG members? Ability to document what vendor products support which specifications and reference implementations Other??
8
Next Steps: Roadmap, potential tools, how to get involved…
Phase 1 Sept. 09-Dec. 09 Launch web site at the Dec. OMG meeting (Long Beach, CA) Phase 2 Jan March 2010 Enhanced version launch at the OMG meeting (Jacksonville, FL) Tools Explore use of OMG standards based repository/front-end from Adaptive Inc. ?? How to get involved? Help with requirements/features of the knowledgebase in Phase 1 (Aug.-Sept. 09) Test the knowledgebase, provide feedback (Oct-Nov. 09) Spread the word, more users the better
