Two World Wars left millions of people wondering what were the meanings of the destruction and life itself. Thinkers like Sigmund Freud reexamined ideas about the nature of the mind and commonly accepted institutions, like religion. Freud’s ideas about psychoanalysis made artists and writers consider the reasons behind behaviors.

Realism Attempting to represent life as we really experience it Disjointed timelines Including flashbacks Stream-of-consciousness Portraying a character’s thoughts as they flow naturally Emphasizing point of view How a person’s point of view affects perception and understanding The individual’s inner psychological reality

3 Characteristics of Modernist Literature
Showing how the past continues to affect us Characters often remember the past painfully Ambiguous endings Often leave the reader thinking about what should happen next or what the experiences signified Making each word count Using words that are highly descriptive, symbolic and help define the character’s personality

Disillusionment A feeling of disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be Losing naïve faith and trust How war affects humanity Loneliness and anonymity in the modern world Utopia A place that’s achieved perfection in laws, government, and social conditions Dystopia A place where people often lead dehumanized and fearful lives
