In this enquiry you will be looking at the causes of earthquakes and then comparing two earthquakes which happened in different parts of the world. Good You will know words which are used when dealing with earthquakes. You will be able to name the Plate boundaries where earthquakes take place and give a basic explanation of why they happen. You will be able to describe where the two earthquakes took place and what happened in each case. Better You will be able to use key terminology when writing about earthquakes. 3 Describe the location of Haiti and then Japan. Click on the country to zoom in and describe exactly where it is in more detail. Remember to refer to continent, lines of latitude, bordering countries, oceans and seas and use compass directions.

4 Comparing the Kobe Earthquake in Japan with the Haiti Earthquake.
Use the links to create a Fact file about the two countries. Comment on the following things in each country. GDP per capita (gives a good indication of how wealthy a country is) Industries in each country. (might suggest which is the wealthiest) Unemployment and poverty. Now write a short comparison of the level of development between the two countries. To extend your answer use an atlas to find information about life expectancy and number of doctors per 1000 people. Remember to use PEE in your writing.

Primary effects are the things that happen during the earthquake while the ground is shaking. Such as buildings collapsing. Secondary effects are the things that happen after the earthquake such as fires or water supplies or lack of food and water.
