1 Treaty of Versailles and the Great Depression

2 What was the Treaty of Versailles?
It was a treaty that the leaders of the countries involved in World War I agreed on at the end of World War I. The countries met in Versailles, France so the treaty was named after the city. Many of the winning countries blamed Germany for the war, and they made Germany responsible for paying for the war. Germany had to give up land and overseas colonies, paid a tremendous amount of money, and had to drastically reduce the size of its army and navy.

3 What happened in 1929 that affected the world?
The stock market crash of 1929 in the United States began an economic depression that not only affected us but the whole world. Germany was especially hard hit since the U.S. was unable to continue providing it with aid to rebuild its economy.

4 What happened in Germany as a result of the Treaty of Versailles and the worldwide depression?
People were distraught because of the harsh conditions in Germany. Harsh conditions led to an extremist (Hitler) coming to power in Germany. Germany stopped paying war reparations. Germany began rebuilding its military. Germany began reclaiming lands they had lost due to the Treaty of Versailles in Africa.
