Jonah 3:1 “Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,” This highlights God’s sovereignty and grace! 2 2

Jonah 3:2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” God’s Word is what God wants declared! 3 3

Jonah 3:3 “So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.” There are no “But’s” here! Rebellious disobedience can be replaced with true obedience. 4 4

Jonah 3:4 “Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”” Jonah goes into the city. He declares God’s Word! 6 6

Jonah 3:5 “And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.” They believed God! All of Nineveh – the least to the greatest! 7 7 7

Jonah 3:5 Real repentance is aroused by a confrontation with the Word of God! The Word of God is a hammer to the heart of a sinner (Jeremiah 23:29)! The Word of God bears witness to the One who gives life (John 5:39)! 8 8 8

Jonah 3:6 “The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.” The king takes the Word of God to heart as does all of Nineveh! 9 9 9

Jonah 3:6 Real repentance is displayed in a reformation that is thorough going. It engages the heart! Once the Word of God engages the heart, real change occurs! 10 10 10

Jonah 3:7-8 “And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.”” 11 11 11

Jonah 3:7-8 Real repentance is displayed in a belief that moves towards action. The Ninevites are not responding in behavior modification! The Ninevites are struck to the heart with the message of God! 12 12 12

Jonah 3:7-8 Real repentance is displayed in a belief that moves us to turn away from specific sin. Real repentance coming from a heart impacted by the Word of God under the sacred work of the Holy Spirit should lead us in our lives to turn wholly and specifically away from sin as we turn to our Glorious God! 13 13 13

Jonah 3:9 “Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” The king and his people will cry out for mercy! 14 14 14

Jonah 3:10 “When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that He had said He would do to them, and He did not do it.” When sinners repent, God relents! This is a REVIVAL! 15 15 15
