Communities that serve as a central destination for people from the surrounding areas. The functions of the central place destination may be a variety of things.
(health care, shopping, entertainment, etc.)

These are communities that are destinations for large quantities of wholesale goods. (Bulk Goods)
Good are shipped there, re-organized and reshipped. Some goods remain in that destination.
(Halifax has a container terminal and participates in this function)

The extent in which a community specializes in different areas of industry.
It is calculated using the Location Quotient formula.
LQ (location quotient) =
% of people from a community employed in an industry
% of people from Canada employed in the same industry (higher than 1 is specialized)
