1 Plant and Animal Cells By Mrs. Hough

2 Falcon Focus Use the periodic table to determine which element symbols are used to spell the word bacon. (3 minutes) Answer: barium, carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen Or Barium, cobalt, nitrogen

3 Parts and Functions of Plant and Animal Cells
Objective: To identify and describe the parts and functions of a plant and animal cell Essential Question: What are the major functions of organelles in a plant and animal cell?

4 Turn and Talk Turn to the person sitting left of you.
2. Make a list of all of the cell parts that you know from a plant and animal cell. 3. Be prepared to share with the class.

5 Stand and Share One person from each pair stand up.
Listen to the parts of the plant and animal cell that are shared. If you have the same items then sit down. If your items are DIFFERENT continue to stand.

6 Who was the first person to discover cells?
Robert Hooke

7 Microscope use by Robert Hooke

8 Cells A cell is the smallest unit of life that conducts all life functions.

9 Major Structures Cells have major structures known as organelles.

10 Major Cellular Organelles
Cell wall Cell membrane Nucleus Vacuole Chloroplast Mitochondria Cytoplasm

11 Plant Cell

12 Animal Cell nucleus cytoplasm mitochondria cell membrane vacuole

13 What is the difference between the two cells?
Plants have: chloroplasts cell walls Animal cells only have: cell membrane They don’t have chloroplasts because they don’t make their own food.

14 Both Cells Have: cytoplasm cell membrane vacuoles mitochondrias nuclei

15 Another View: Plant Cell Animal Cell

16 Functions of Cell Parts:
cell wall- provides shape and support for the plant cell; is mostly made of cellulose

17 Cell membrane cell membrane- controls the flow of material into and out of the cell Diffusion is when materials move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water across the cell membrane.

18 Cytoplasm: Cyto means “cell” Plasm means “liquid”
Cytoplasm- a jelly-like substance found in a cell

19 Nucleus nucleus- the control center of the cell; it also contains genetic materials

20 Mitochondria mitochondria- converts sugar into energy
It is known as the powerhouse of the cell

21 Vacuole vacuole-acts as a temporary storage center

22 Chloroplasts Chloroplasts- contain chlorophyll used to make food in plant cells

23 Ticket out the Door: True or False
Plant and animal cells have chloroplasts. The mitochondria is known as a temporary storage center. Osmosis occurs in the cell membrane. Animal cells have a large vacuole. Cytoplasm is found in both the plant and animal cell.
