ISI Research Opportunities via Maui High Performance Computing Center
Developed for the Computational Sciences Division Information Sciences Institute Dan M. Davis (310) by DMDC Proprietary, © Dan M. Davis 2011
2
Current Status of MHPCC Proposal and Start Date
UH has been given a 90 day extension Gene Bal says it lasts “… almost to the end of 2011.” Group opinion: AFRL does not want to extend again SAIC anticipated AFRL may ask for BAFO Requested sub-K BAFO from us Shari Krimm is working it UNM underbid UH in previous competition UH stuck by guns and won as better value Dan has counseled SAIC along those lines SAIC “price to win” analysis suggests a ~5% cut in $$s Pinged SAIC about news this AM Dave Pratt responded; no word from Steve Karwoski AFRL has gone silent; BAFO data ready at SAIC Dave thinks no BAFO request; decision mid-November -

ISI Positioning at MHPCC
ISI staff will have significant roles at MHPCC Bob Lucas will be the CTO/Lead on Energy Resch. Dan Davis is leading the DoD Outreach effort MHPCC is important player in DoD HPC It can have a more vital function within AFRL It is now the locus of a range of HPCMP research As CTO and Outreach, ISI can be gate-keeper We’ll see all research, both old and new We can ID the efforts amenable to ISI science We can steer both end-users and researchers to ISI Positions also give us entrée to DoD commands: Procurement Operational Others We will concentrate on new research customers
4
Strategy & Approach Use MHPCC as springboard for ISI research
Leverage Bob’s and Dan’s long-time contacts, both personal and professional, to acquire new work Monitor MHPCC outreach for ISI opportunities Contact major commands to generate new grants Create a visible ISI & USC presence at MHPCC Host MHPCC activities at ISI and at conferences Encourage MHPCC authors to co-author with ISI Investigate ISI or USC status (Resch Prof?) for one or two key research PhDs at MHPCC
5
New Research Opportunities Non-Exhaustive Summary List Expanded further in following slides
Research already at MHPCC Directed Energy research areas at AFRL Virtual Human Behavior (New DoD research center?) Officer Education using ISI Battlefield Sims and DEN Test & Evaluation on Distributed HPC (Growth area) K-12 Ed (DoD and civ.) using MHPCC and ISI AI Cyber Warfare Command research enabled by MHPCC and ISI SCI capabilities New opportunities in San Antonio DoD communities
