Hyperbole and we will understand its use in literary works Have students share with partners the objective then call on 3 non volunteer to share today’s objective

3 Paul Bunyan is said to have been such a large infant that he slept in a covered wagon instead of a crib. As an adult, he supposedly used tree trunks as toothpicks. Discuss with your partner what Paul Bunyan would use as a bed in today’s world that would suit a giant his size. Activate Prior knowledge Have students use their imagination to come up with response Have them pair share and call on Non volunteers

4 Hyperbole- is exaggerated statement that creates an idea in a readers mind. It is used to emphasize a point or add excitement and humor. They are not meant to be taken literally. Example: He’s as fast a lightening Example: Her heart stopped when the door flew open. Concept development Introduce meaning of hyperbole, have students pronounce exaggeration Give an example Have students pair share the meaning of hyperbole and tell why the example is an hyperbole Use TAPPLE

5 Why is it important to understand Hyperbole
To become better readers and recognize when the author is trying to entertain us or make us laugh Read the importance and have students share other reasons why it is important to understand hyperbole Ask for other suggestions regarding importance.
