Who’s in the election of 1800 1) Thomas Jefferson- Democratic-Republican Federalists believed he was an atheist wanting to destroy religion 2) John Adams- Federalists Democratic-Republicans believed he wanted to turn the executive branch into a monarchy

Electoral Deadlock Jefferson beats Adams but ties with running mate Aaron Burr 6 days passed and House of Representatives couldn’t break the tie Alexander Hamilton intervenes and convinces the House to support Jefferson This resulted in the 12th Amendment: electors cast separate ballots for president, vice-president

Simplifying the Presidency Jefferson’s goal- reduce the size or power of the government 1) reduced the size of the army 2) halted the expansion of the navy 3) lowered government spending 4) Favors free trade over government-controlled trade Southern Dominance of Politics Jefferson first to take office in new Washington, D.C.

Federalists John Marshall served as Chief Justice for over 30 years Adams pushes Judiciary Act of 1801, adding 16 federal judges Most of these 16 judges were Federalists and became known as midnight judges Adams one last stab at Jefferson

7 Marbury vs. Madison William Marbury- one of the midnight judges whose papers were not delivered He sued in response to this John Marshall decided that John Adams provision was unconstitutional Marbury vs. Madison established judicial review Ability of the Supreme Court to declare an act of Congress unconstitutional

The Louisiana Purchase Jefferson fears a strong French presence near the US Napoleon Bonaparte was busy attempting to expand France in Europe Jefferson persuades Napoleon to sell Louisiana for 15 million Louisiana Purchase- doubles the size of the US

Lewis and Clark Jefferson appoints Lewis and Clark to lead Corps of Discovery: The Goals: 1) explore new territory and find route to Pacific 2) gather information about people, plants, and animals Native American woman, Sacajawea, serves as interpreter and guide
