Must be personal and reflective
Avoid generalisations-be very specific
Support what you say with examples

11. PERSONAL STATEMENT Aim for an effective opening:
‘I am currently studying…’
‘I have a passion for…’
Instead– relate it to your personal experiences
Avoid quotations!

Living and learning in an area commonly associated with poverty and deprivation, has shaped and developed a strong desire to expand my knowledge in the subject of economics.

14. PERSONAL STATEMENT Standard English Accurate
Avoid overusing the first person ‘I’
Vary sentence openings
Use a wide range of verbs and be careful with a thesaurus
