Output devices Cathode ray tube (CRT) - Streams of electrons make phosphors glow on a large vacuum tube. Liquid crystal display (LCD) - A flat panel display that uses crystals to let varying amounts of different colored light to pass through it. Light-emitting diode (LED) - is a flat panel display, which uses light-emitting diodes as a video display.

I/O Input/output devices
Connecting Hardware to the computer: Hardware needs access through some general input/output connection. Peripheral device: A piece of hardware like a disk drive, that is outside the main computer. Port: The pathway for data to go into and out of the computer from external devices such as keyboards. Device driver: Software addition to the operating system that will allow the computer to communicate with a particular device.

1 - PS/2 mouse port (green). This port is for a PS/2 mouse. 2 - PS/2 keyboard port (purple). This port is for a PS/2 keyboard. 3 - Coaxial S/PDIF Out port. This port connects an external audio output device through a coaxial S/PDIF cable. 4 - DVI port. DVI is a standard for connecting computers to digital monitors and provides a pure digital video signal to a digital flat-panel display or projector. 5 - Video Graphics Adapter port. This port is for a VGA monitor or other VGA-compatible devices. 6 - IEEE 1394a port. This 6-pin IEEE 1394a port provides high-speed connectivity for audio/video devices, storage peripherals, PCs, or portable devices. 7 - USB 2.0 ports 1, 2, 3, and 4. These four Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports are available for connecting USB 2.0 devices. 8 - LAN (RJ-45) port. This port allows connection to a Local Area Network (LAN) through a network hub, with speed up to 10/100/1000 Mbps. 9 - Line In port (light blue). This port connects a tape, CD, DVD player, or other audio sources. 10 - Line Out port (lime). This port connects to headphones or a speaker or it can function as Front Speakers Out. 11 - Microphone port (pink). This port connects a microphone.
