2. About this class... English 11 is American Literature.
Students study two novels, one nonfiction book, and a play:
Their Eyes Were Watching God
The Great Gatsby
The Crucible
Into the Wild
Students also study foundational documents of the US, poetry, and films.
Students will read two novels independently: one classic and one free choice.
Students write narratives, essays, and arguments, give presentations, and hold class discussions.
Our theme is “What does it mean to live an authentic life?”

6. About this class...
English 9 is a survey course that prepares students for anything they might have to do in an English class in high school.
We read short stories, two novels, and a play:
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian
Romeo and Juliet
We also study poetry, mythology, and films.
Students write analytical essays, fictional narratives, and arguments.

9. Welcome to AP English

10. About this class...
AP Language and Composition is about the art of rhetoric.
Students learn to read deeply, analyze thoroughly, and write articulately.
We read nonfiction almost exclusively in this class.
All students are expected to take the AP test.
The AP Lang Test is May 10, 2017.

11. Class Procedures
Vocab Journals due weekly (5 words from class readings)
Reading and annotating texts!!!!
Essay Writing
Students should expect to write AT LEAST one essay every two weeks.
Timed writes will increase as we get nearer the test date.
Research Project
Students will be expected to conduct research on their chosen topic outside of class. This is ongoing starting next month and will culminate in a research essay and presentation in February or March.

12. Grading No late work is accepted. Summative Assessments 50%
Classwork/Homework 30%
Participation/Responsibility 20%
Students should expect minutes of homework per night.

14. What parents can do to help...
Good food, plenty of rest, family time, outdoor time, exercise.
Read, watch, listen and discuss everything together. Knowing current events, history and literature helps students do well on the test.
