33
Why do we use design thinking?
35
Empathize Identify the underlying human need.
36
Design Research “If I had asked customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” - Henry Ford
37
Design research is not…
38
Who is the “End-User” of our learning environment?
Students Engaged Students ↔ Disengaged Students Extraverted Students ↔ Introverted Students English Language Learner ↔ Native Speaker Historical “A” Students ↔ Historical “C” Students Hard Worker ↔ Just gets it
39
Who is the “End-User” of our learning environment?
Who are your “end-users?”
40
Proto-Personas
41
Representative Student’s Sketch and Demographics
Proto-Personas Representative Student’s Sketch and Demographics Behaviors / Beliefs Needs Goals
42
Proto-Personas Student’s Sketch and Demographics 10-Year-Old
Lower- middle income (no economic supports such as FRL) Single Parent Home Below grade level in reading
43
Proto-Personas Behaviors / Beliefs High Attendance Compliant
Becomes fatigued during longer periods of work Believes he is not strong academically Believes he has strong social abilities
44
Proto-Personas Needs A way to expend energy during the day
Collaborative work with other students Brain Breaks Direct and timely feedback on academic work Opportunities to redo work after feedback from the teacher Support in talking about academics with parents
45
Proto-Personas Goals College
Making the middle school soccer team next year
46
Proto-Personas Step 1 (15 minutes):
Individually, fill out proto-personas about your end-users (students)…as many as you can!
47
Proto-Personas Step 2 (5 minutes):
Share your proto-personas with your team, then vote on 4 or 5 that best represent your students.
48
Why? Proto-Personas Step 3 (15 minutes):
As a team, re-define these 4-5 proto-personas on these papers: Why?
49
Proto-personas Help define who to build empathy with.
Will be used to examine and re-examine our understandings and assumptions of users throughout the project.
50
Proto-Personas Step 3 (15 minutes):
As a team, re-define these 4-5 proto-personas on these papers:
51
Proto-Personas Step 4 (15 minutes):
See the bottom portion of this paper. For each proto-persona, place or draw a dot on the spectrum for that student.
52
How is this student best served?
Fully Student Driven Fully Teacher Driven Real-world project-based environments Curriculum-driven learning environments Authentic application as assessment Quizzes/Tests only as assessment
53
Proto-Personas Step 4 (15 minutes):
Unfold the bottom portion of this paper. For each proto-persona, place or draw a dot on the spectrum for that student.
