2 Bellringer, Hon., 9/5 If you were asked to describe to someone what a Puritan is, what would you say (using one or more complete sentences)? Also, turn in Puritan papers (homework) to tray if you took it home to finish

3 Activity, 9/5 Hon. Write “Graded by …” on the paper you receive; only red pens can be out Grade the papers. Counts as formative grade, assessing reading comprehension of nonfiction When you receive your own paper back, you will use this for a formative writing assignment that will be due next Monday (assignment given out tomorrow in class)

6 Activity, Tues, 9/5 Reg. As you receive the papers you have completed on our study of the historical Salem witch trials, you will use this information to write a paragraph summarizing the witch trials

7 4th per. Summary Paragraph (due at beginning of period tomorrow)
You will write a paragraph that summarizes the Salem witch trials of the 1690’s. You will need to include: A topic sentence that generally describes what the Salem witch trials were 3-4 sentences that outline significant events and people that were involved, including what started them and 2-3 significant developments that took place as the trials continued A final sentence that sums up how they ended AND the impact they had in history Staple the rubric to your paper when you turn it into the tray.

Have Bellringer papers out and ready to write your answer to the following question after viewing the opening scene of The Crucible movie. I will begin the scene as soon as the bell rings. What differences did you notice in the opening scene from what you read about the historical account of the beginning of the witch trials (i.e., the accounts of Tituba and the girls)?

– Do you think the movie version of Tituba and the girls makes a better story than the actual historical account? Why or why not?

10 Honors Formative Writing assignment due next Wednesday, 9/13:
Write an essay comparing and contrasting Act I details to the historical account of Salem witch trials. Your essay should contain at least two body paragraphs—one comparing similarities, and one contrasting differences. In each body paragraph you should include textual evidence from readings/worksheets about historical details and textual evidence from the play. The essay will be graded using the VLT informational essay rubric

11 Honors, 9/6, 9/7 Activity As we read…
Make a large Venn diagram on a piece of paper. As we read, write differences and similarities you notice in play from historical details you learned Write line #’s beside the details you write Consider aspects of character, events/plot, setting, background information, stage directions

12 Bellringer, 9/6 (4th per) What is one strategy to use to try to figure out what something means when you don’t know one or more words in the passage?

13 Activitiy 9/6 Reg. Make a chart on paper w/three columns: Unfamiliar Words/Guess at meaning/Actual meaning As we read you will list unfamiliar words from text while reading and make a guess at meaning; turn in for stamp grade (leave “actual meaning” column blank right now)

14 But first….watch this Watch opening scene of play from movie --Class discuss: How is this different from what you read about the historical trials?
