Here are some facts about Finnish families and the way of living in Finland. Please discuss them in your group and compare to your home countries. You do not need to discuss everything – concentrate on the ones that interest you.

Lifecycle Life expectancy: age 83,8 women / 77,8 men
Children move out of parental home: age 20 women / 21 men First marriage at the age 30 women / 32 men (European average: /30) First child at the age of 28 women / 31 men 1,8 children in a family Same-sex couples are able to register their union. Cohabitation before marriage is very common. Equality between the sexes in the family: In most families both parents work outside the home and children are in day care. Both husband and wife take part in household work. Maternity leave 10 months (with ca. 70% salary) can be divided between both parents. Additional 1-2 months paternity leave

Income: - All sectors 3284 e/month - State 3482 e/month - Private sector 3503 e/m. Retirement at the age of 63–68 years. The Finnish maternity package (since 1938) has for several decades been the only one of its kind worldwide.
