UN/DOT Hazard Regulations

2. Hazardous Substance By DOT definition, a hazardous substance is:
“A substance or material, including a hazardous substance, hazardous waste, marine pollutant, or elevated temperature material which has been determined by the Secretary of Transportation to be capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce and which has been so designated.”

3. HAZARD CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

4. HAZARD CLASS 1 Explosives
Division Mass explosion hazard
Division Projection hazard but no mass explosion hazard
Division Fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both
Division Minor explosion hazard
Division Very insensitive explosives but mass explosion hazard
Division Extremely insensitive articles and no mass explosion hazard

5. HAZARD CLASS 2 Compressed Gases
Division Flammable gas
Division Non-flammable, non-poisonous compressed gas
Division Gas poisonous by inhalation
Non-liquefied compressed gas means entirely gaseous at 68 F.
Liquefied compressed gas means partially liquid at 68 F.
Compressed gas in solution is a non-liquefied compressed gas that is dissolved in a solvent.
Cryogenic liquid means a refrigerated liquefied having a boiling point colder than –130 F at 14.7 psia.

6. HAZARD CLASS 3 Flammable Liquids
A Flammable Liquid means a liquid having a flash point of not more than 141 F
A Combustible Liquid means any liquid that does not meet the definition of any other hazard class and has a flash point above 141 F and below 200 F.

7. HAZARD CLASS 4 Flammable Solids
Division Desensitized explosives or readily combustible solids
Division Spontaneously Combustible Material, ie. pyrophoric materials or self-heating materials
Division Dangerous when wet material

8. HAZARD CLASS 5 Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides
An oxidizer means a material that may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause or enhance the combustion of other materials
An organic peroxide is any organic compound containing oxygen (0) in the bivalent -00- structure and which may be considered a derivative of hydrogen peroxide, where one or more of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by organic radicals

9. HAZARD CLASS 6 Poisons
Division Materials, other than gases, which are known to be toxic to humans during a transportation incident
Division An infectious substance, meaning a viable microorganism, or its toxin that causes or may cause disease in humans or animals

10. HAZARD CLASS 7 Radioactive Materials
Radioactive material means any material having a specific activity greater than microcuries per gram
HAZARD CLASS 8 Corrosive Materials
A corrosive material means a liquid or solid that causes full thickness destruction of human skin at the site of contact within a specified period of time. A liquid that has a severe corrosion rate on steel or aluminum.

11. HAZARD CLASS 9 Miscellaneous Materials
A material which presents a hazard during transportation but which does not meet the definition of any other hazard class.
This class includes:
Any material which has an anaesthetic, noxious or other similar property which could cause extreme annoyance or discomfort to a flight crew member; or,
Any material that meets the definition for an elevated temperature material, a hazardous substance, a hazardous waste, or a marine pollutant.
