2. Maths Curriculum
The Early Years Maths curriculum is divided into two areas:
Number
Shape, Space and Measure
“Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.”

3. The children work towards achieving a number of outcomes by the end of Reception.
Numbers: children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Shape, space and measures: children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

4. Everyday Maths
At Monkfield Park we develop early mathematical understanding through everyday experiences.

5. Counting how many children are in the dinner line.
Adding/taking away from the class total after completing the register.
Changing the class calendar together.
Counting actions to match the date.
Sharing the fruit equally between the class.

6. By focussing on real life situations increases engagement, active learning and the ability to make links across aspects of learning.

Clocks, watches and sand timers to discuss and measure time and events.
Scales, tape measures, rulers etc. for measuring and comparing sizes.
