Homer Plessy refused to sit in a Jim Crow car He was brought before judge John H. Ferguson of criminal court for New Orleans Ferguson upheld the law, law was than challenged in supreme court

4 When and where did case take place?
May 18, 1896 US Supreme Court

5 Events that lead up before the Supreme Court
African American train passenger refused to sit in Crow car Plessy breaking Louisiana law Plessy said his rights were violated Legal distinction between whites and blacks did not conflict with the 13th and 14th amendments

6 What was happening in the world that this case needed to be tried ?
Racial segregation laws were coming into place Equal protection clause, which prohibits the states from denying equal protection of the laws to any person within their jurisdiction Open up public services for african americans and whites to join in together with now law between them

7 Supreme Court decision
It upheld state racial segregation laws for public facilities under the doctrine of “ Separate but Equal”.

8 Reason for Supreme Court decision ?
Arguments in the case evolved around the 13th amendment and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment Did the Louisiana law segregating seated violate Plessy's equal protection under the law

9 Opposing Viewpoints Majority of the people rejected Plessy’s arguments
That the act violated the 13th amendment Which it also prohibited slavery Also the 14th amendment which gave full citizen rights to african americans It did not reestablish slavery or constitute a badge of slavery

10 How do you feel about the ruling ?
I feel good about the ruling because I believe everyone should be equal and that no one is different from one another. I also believe skin color does not define what you can or able to do throughout your life.

11 Significance of other court cases ?
Other cases talk about how certain people because of gender can or can not do something. To this, that could be another case to rule about. For example, some women are not allowed in certain branches in the military, and men are allowed in all of them. An immediate impact from this case would be that there would be less violence and more care for eachother. Also, a long term effect would be as a country all the people would get more accomplished since everyone can work together and all people can be equal rights in all that they do. Finally, this case is considered a landmark because it upheld state racial segregation laws.
