Congress approved three departments under the President The Heads of these Executive Departments are known as the Cabinet Department of State Set up to deal with other countries Department of War Set up to defend the country Treasury Department Set up to control the country's money

Washington met often with the three men to ask their advice and for their help Today there are more departments, but the president still asks them for advice

Whiskey Rebellion Congress needed money for the Treasury Taxed whiskey Western farmers complained because they made the whiskey and thought the tax would make it too expensive for people to buy Rebelled and Washington sent in troops to make them pay the taxes (Enforcing the law!)

13 French Revolution 1789: people in France rebelled against their king and kicked out the monarchy They created a republic: a government where representatives of the people run the country Many Americans were happy because another country wanted to create a republic

14 Different Attitudes Jefferson and his Anti-Federalists friends changed their name to Democratic-Republicans Hamilton and his Federalist friends did not support the French rebels because they killed over 20,000 people (many of them wealthy people like them) They worried that people might do the same thing to them

Written by Alexander Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury British agreed to leave the forts that had held during the Revolutionary War America agreed to give Great Britain trading advantages Democratic Republicans did not approve because they thought it would make France mad at them!!! France and Great Britain still hate each other

Washington was so worried about the fights between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans that he ran again to keep the country together After 2 four year terms, Washington retired in 1796

Urged people to remember that they were all Americans and should be united Warned of the dangers of political parties (a political group) Warned about getting involved with foreign countries Left the nation united and at peace 

Weak National government Agricultural (farming economy) Supported by farmers, artisans (people who make things), and traders in the South and West Strong National Government Manufacturing economy (based on making and selling things) Supported by rich bankers and businessmen in the North
