1 Siege of Leningrad блокадный Ленинград

2 This was the most tragic period in the history of the city, a period full of heroism. For everyone who lives in St. Petersburg the Blokada (the Siege) of Leningrad is an important part of the city's heritage and a painful memory for the population's older generations.

3 …in June 1941, the population of Leningrad was about 2,500,000.
on September 12th, those in charge of the city estimated that they had the following supplies: (они имели следующие поставки по прогнозам) flour for 35 days (мука) cereals for 30 days (крупа) meat for 33 days fats for 45 days (жиры) sugar for 60 days

4 In November 1941, while the siege was in its early stages, 11,000 people died of what the authorities called 'alimentary dystrophy' (hunger) - over 350 a day. However, this number greatly increased as the winter took a hold on the city. "I watched my father and mother die - I knew perfectly well they were starving(голодали). But I wanted their bread more than I wanted them to stay alive(остались живы). And they knew that about me too. That's what I remember about the blockade: that feeling that you wanted your parents to die because you wanted their bread."

5 Rations were down to half a pound of bread a day, and very little else.
'Bread' baked by bakers even in the first few months had only 50% flour(муки).

6 No one is forgotten Nothing is forgotten
Russia will never forget the heroes of those who worked on the Way of Life during the heroic defencе (подвиге) of Leningrad. On December 26, 1941, the bread ration in Leningrad was increased. (увеличены)

7 Several hundred thousand people were evacuated from the city across Lake Ladoga via the famous "Road of Life" ("Doroga Zhizni") - the only route that connected the besieged city with the mainland. During the warm season people were ferried to the mainland, and in winter - carried by trucks that drove across the frozen lake under constant enemy bombardment.
