What are the steps in the scientific method?
PG 0A – 0J Essential Question What are the steps in the scientific method? Standard B.2B - know that hypotheses are tentative and testable statements that must be capable of being supported or not supported by observational evidence.

Direct Instruction CHAMPs
C – No talking unless directed to do so by the teacher. All conversation should be on topic. H – Raise your hand and ask. Do not yell out. A – Following along with the discussion and taking notes. M – Remain in seat. No restroom passes during lecture. NO sharpening pencils. You may get up to get a tissue ONLY. P – Be a part of the discussion. Share ideas. Take notes. NO heads on desk. Biology only.
6
The Scientific Method involves a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence.
7
We shall take a closer look at these steps and the terminology you will need to understand before you start a science project.
8
Observation/Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment
Scientific Method Problem/Question Observation/Research Formulate a Hypothesis Experiment Collect and Analyze Results Conclusion/Communicate the Results
9
Steps of the Scientific Method
1. Problem/Question: Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.
10
Steps of the Scientific Method
2. Observation/Research: Make observations and research your topic of interest.
11
Do you remember the next step?
12
Steps of the Scientific Method
3. Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Written in the “if…then…because” format. On Page 0B - Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
13
On page 0B – with your shoulder partner come up with 3 examples of “if……then…..”
14
Steps of the Scientific Method
4. Experiment: Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).
15
Steps of the Scientific Method
5. Collect and Analyze Results/Data: record the data/results in tables, graphs, and photographs. Confirm the results by retesting.
16
Qualitative Data – nonnumeric, descriptive data
Types of Data Qualitative Data – nonnumeric, descriptive data Quantitative Data – measurable numeric data (uses a tool of measurement)
17
Steps of the Scientific Method
6. Conclusion: a statement summarizing the results that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.
18
Steps of the Scientific Method
7. Communicate the Results: Be prepared to present the project to an audience. Expect questions from the audience.
19
Think you can name all seven steps?
Collect and Analyze Results Formulate a Hypothesis Communicate the Results Observation/Research Problem/Question Experiment Conclusion
20
Let’s put our knowledge of the Scientific Method to a realistic example that includes some of the terms you’ll be needing to use and understand.
21
Do you know the difference between the independent and dependent variables?
22
Independent Variable The independent, or manipulated variable, is a factor that’s intentionally varied by the experimenter. Page 0B - Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
23
Dependent Variable The dependent, or responding variable, is the factor that may change as a result of changes made in the independent variable. On Page 0B - Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
24
On page 0B – The dependent DEPENDS on the independent.
25
Control Group In a scientific experiment, the control is the group that serves as the standard of comparison. The control group may be a “no treatment" or an “experimenter selected” group.
26
All experiments should have a control group.
The control group is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, except for the variable being tested. All experiments should have a control group. On Page 0B - Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
27
Constants The constants in an experiment are all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep the same.
28
Can you think of some constants for this experiment?
On Page 0B - Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.
29
Repeat the experiment at least 3 times.
Trials Trials refer to replicate groups that are exposed to the same conditions in an experiment. Repeat the experiment at least 3 times.
30
On page 0B – with your shoulder partner, identify the dependent variable, independent variable, control, and constants for each scenario you came up with.
31
