The Crusades: Background
Travelers quietly travel…look tired, but excited when you FINALLY see your site. Narrator: As religion touched nearly every part of medieval life, people of all classes traveled to places of religious interest on pilgrimages. The special place might be the grave of a martyr or a church that sheltered the memories of a saint. Travel was hard, but discomfort was worth the sacrifice. The pilgrim who could not afford a horse traveled on foot, aided by a staff. The typical pilgrim wore a cloak, tied by a cord, and a brimmed felt hat.

The Crusades: The Cause
Holy Land Manager: Hold the “Private Property” sign between the closet and hallway door. Narrator: Every country had its favorite shrines, but the great shrine for all Christians was the Holy City, Jerusalem (in Israel). The Holy Land had been held by Muslim Arabs for centuries, but Christian pilgrims had been allowed to travel there unbothered. When the Holy Land fell in the 11th century to the Seljuq Turks, who had recently converted to Islam, they persecuted pilgrims.

The Crusades: The Beginning
Byzantine Emperor – Give letter that says “Help Please” to messenger. Narrator: Christian Europe then vowed to win control of the Holy Land from the Turks. After a letter from the Byzantine Emperor asking for help, Pope Urban II made a declaration in 1095 asking for knights to travel to the Holy Land. They were to fight the Muslim Turks and take control of Jerusalem. On that command he sent forth Europe to fight a series of religious wars called the Crusades that were designed to restore control of the Holy Land to the Christians.

Narrator: Italy played a major role during the Crusades as well as afterward. Italian ships that used to carry knights and supplies to fight in the Holy Land, now carried merchants. Merchants would travel on Italian ships to the Middle East where they would trade for spices, glass, silk, porcelain, etc. from the East. They would then sell those goods to Western Europeans.
